Description

Paringa Estate is one of the jewels of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula wine region, consistently making some of the nation’s leading examples of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay.

Founder and owner, Lindsay McCall, established the vineyard in 1985. He is lauded as one of the region’s handful of pioneers. He bought an old north-facing orchard and planted The Paringa vineyard. At an elevation of 140 metres it curls around the landscape like a vinous amphitheatre, sheltered from the harsh southwesterly winds. The deep, rich volcanic soils give power, flavour and structure to the wines. The vines are reaching their peak of maturity too, and this is a crucial factor in producing wine of the highest quality. In 2007, Paringa Estate was awarded the innaugral “Best Winery in Australia,” in the ‘James Halliday’s Wine Companion’ book – an astonishing achievement for someone with no formal training in viticulture or winemaking.

The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range. In recent years Paringa has renewed its focus in ensuring the Peninsula range over delivers on quality, this 2019 Paringa Peninsula Chardonnay is no exception.

Fruit for these wines is sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with the emphasis on lively fruit.

“The quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best”James Halliday

The fruit was handpicked, whole bunch pressed, and the unclarified juice was barrel fermented, and stirred regularly over its 9 months maturation in oak, to build palate weight and complexity. As 2020 was a year with high natural acidity, all the chardonnay ferments went through malolactic fermentation.

The 2020 blend certainly packs a punch! Tight aromas of grapefruit and white peach are complemented with higher zesty notes of lemon pith. The palate is balanced and full of pure fruit flavours, with taut acidity pushing out the length.

Reviews for 2019 …93 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “I suspect 2019 was a pretty good year down in the Mornington Peninsula. Some flint and smoke over almond, grapefruit and tangy barely ripe fresh pineapple. It’s light and energetic, direct and driving through the palate, and goes long and flinty. It’s such a good and lively wine to drink. Really enjoyable.”

93 points, Campbell Mattinson for Halliday’s Wine Companion Oak rears at first, but it quickly settles into fine drinking form. Stone fruit, custard apple and cream-caramel characters burst confidently through the palate and on through the finish.”

92 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review “Light yellow-straw colour, with attractive toasted nut aromas & flavours. It’s tight & delicate, restrained & fresh, with good intensity & refinement, the finish lingering on a long time. A gorgeous, appetising wine.”
