Description
Geoff and Susan Bull were early viticultural pioneers on the East Coast of Tasmania, establishing Freycinet Vineyard in 1979. It is situated adjacent to the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula, (latitude 42 degrees), which is named in honour of the French explorer Louis de Freycinet, who chartered the region in 1802. The 15 hectare vineyard is proudly family owned and the wines are 100% grown, produced and bottled on our estate. The site is a warm sheltered one within the truly cool Tasmanian climate. The vineyards are meticulously hand tended to grow moderate yields of fully ripe healthy fruit. The rustic winery houses ‘state of the art’ equipment to ensure wine quality is not lost. The wines are produced with great care, dedication and passion – they are a delicious liquid expression of our unique place on earth, the varieties and the season.
Winemaker notes: “Over more than 25 years, Freycinet Chardonnay has repeatedly won high praise, being especially noted for its consistently high quality and ageworthiness. Prime Chardonnay fruit from our original 1979 plantings is handpicked at optimal ripeness and whole bunch pressed followed by fermentation in French oak barriques. During maturation in barrel, regular battonage is carried out to enhance the texture of the wine and balance the crystalline Tasmanian acidity. The result is a triumphant wine of place; elegant and intense, on par with the finest Chablis wines.
“The 2020 season marked the end of a period of drought conditions on the east coast of Tasmania. Fruit was of excellent quality across all varieties, and produced a smaller harvest of small bunches, resulting in excellent concentration and density of flavour.
“This wine is tightly crafted and combines purity, power and persistence. The delicate aroma features citrus and melon fruits with notes of hazelnut and spice. The palate is pristine, fresh and vibrant revealing ripe rockmelon, white peach, grapefruit and lime peel flavours strung together with shimmering acidity and spicy oak. A wonderful balance of luxurious texture and tension signal a long future ahead. A favourite match with Tasmanian crayfish, this wine is equally suited to roast chicken and pork. While this wine offers considerable pleasure now, cellaring over a 10 to 20 year period will prove rewarding.”
Breathtaking chardonnay is this rendition.. Be quick is all I say.

Regional Trophy Winner (Tasmania) – Halliday Chardonnay Challenge 2022
94 points, Tyson Stelzer for Halliday’s Wine Companion “Fermented and matured in French oak casks with periodic bâtonnage. Tasted a full year before its release, this is a chardonnay in its complete yet embryonic glory, the contrast between a warm site (by Tasmanian standards) and the purity and energy of a cool season. Pitch-perfect ripeness highlights bursts of grapefruit, white peach and fig, perfectly encased in classy cashew-nut French oak, already seamlessly integrated. It holds impressive persistence and line.”
