Description
WINNER – Best Value Winery, James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion “The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day. The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
2023 has been an outstanding year for Bruce Dukes, taking out “Best in Show” for his 2020 Rebus Cabernet at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards – “If there is a ‘winning region’ in this year’s Top 50 Best in Show selection, it has to be Western Australia’s Margaret River”2023 Decanter World Wine Awards.
About this wine from Bruce Dukes “Floris is a modern and engaging expression of our local clone into wine. This style is a coevolution of Modern Australian food and wine culture, which has great emphasis on balance, freshness and hedonistic pleasure. Floris exhibits delicate textures and floral notes reminiscent of white jasmine flowers.”
Gin Gin clone Chardonnay matured and fermented in 1/3 new French oak barriques for 10 months. Restricted malo‐lactic fermentation, battonage fortnightly to add complexity and texture through “sur lie” whilst retaining purity of character and freshness. For immediate enjoyment or cellar up to 5 years. 13% alc.
About the 2022 vintage from the winemaker: “The 2021 to 2022 growing season in Margaret River was one of the highlights in my 33 years of winemaking. Gentle and sustained sunny days provided fruit characterized by intense aromatics, coating natural acidity, and ultra-fine tannin and tension. Fruit was picked purely based on the gorgeous balance of natural acidity and pure fruit expression.”
Brand new release from and exceptional vintage for whites. Reviews for 2021 … 96 points, James Halliday “This has the same back label fruit description of white grapefruit and nectarine as it’s Artus Chardonnay sibling, but that is where the similarity ends. This is all about purity and finesse, the fruit flavours strung on a necklace of diamonds, oak incidental.”
95 points, Melissa Moore, Wine Pilot “…saline sea spray over notes of grapefruit zest, just-picked nectarine and lightly toasted hazelnut oak. The palate is alive with energy and the gorgeous purity of its savoury fruit versus balanced acidity with the lightest tannin grip; a tightrope of taut minerality and savoury oak framing the underlining zing.”
