Description
Set in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is one of the coldest viticulture regions on mainland Australia. It’s not an easy place to grow grapes – Winter is bitterly cold; Spring can be punctuated by severe frosts and the terrain is frighteningly steep. But it is in this unique climate that we can create wines of purity, expression and elegance that speak of their origin.
There are few places in Australia cool enough to craft world class wines from early ripening varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. That this can be achieved in Southern NSW is among the most exciting stories in Australian wine making – and it is what drew Jason & Alecia Brown to purchase the vineyard in 2011.
Under the Brown’s ownership the entire vineyard has been transformed, they have invested heavily; rehabilitating vines, overhauling viticulture practices, planting new varieties and experimenting with sustainable farming methods. But most importantly, rather than just grow grapes to sell to other wineries, all of the vineyard’s fruit (including what was once reserved for Penfolds Yattarna) is now made into wine under the Coppabella label.
About this wine: Vineyard planted in 1993 at 650m elevation. Multiple clones, hand-picked, wild ferment.
Whole bunch pressed straight to barrel (a combination of barriques and puncheons of which 30% were new oak). The wine had zero malolactic fermentation with some partial battonage. To maintain brightness and purity, and to add complexity, a separate component was fermented in stainless steel and kept on lees for six months.
Bright citrus and grapefruit aromas with hints of flint, matchstick and spicy oak. The palate is vibrant, expressive and seamless. There are complex layers of secondary fruit characters, from zingy grapefruit and white apple to nectarine and toast. The generous palate is in perfect tension with the tight, mineral acidity. This fabulous cool climate chardonnay looks great.
Reviews for 2018 “…delivers its grapefruit/white peach message in a blaze of intensity.” – 95 points, James Halliday
“Offering refinement and persistence, this stylish chardonnay shows ripe stone fruit, grapefruit, vanilla and oatmeal characters on the nose, leading to a concentrated palate that is focused and wonderfully weighted. The wine is elegant and firmly structured with a terrific linear finish.” – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
