Winemaker’s Notes about this wine: “This special one-hectare parcel of Chardonnay is perched on a high, north-facing slope in the Southern Valleys’ Taylor Pass subregion. The vines were originally planted in 2000 and are now established as a dry-farmed block. The naturally small yields of the 2021 vintage has resulted in an exceptionally concentrated and lengthy fruit profile of grapefruit, lemon and white fleshed stone fruit alongside subtle toast, grilled hazelnuts and a hint of flint. Bottled without fining or filtration.”

96 Points (Top Ranked Marlborough Chardonnay), Bob Campbell MW – The Real Review – “Taut, intense and complex chardonnay with nectarine, ripe peach, mineral/oyster shell, nutty yeast lees and subtle spicy oak flavours. Very appealing now but with a promising future. Clearly a great vintage. 15/9/2022″
95 Points, Vinous, Rebecca Gibb MW, April 2023 – “The 2021 Escaroth Vineyard Chardonnay is all compact power. It’s overtly savoury, exuding smoky bacon and toast alongside Chardonnay’s white stone fruit. This forceful style hails from a hillside vineyard planted on clay loams. In the winery, it’s whole-bunch pressed, and there’s a high solids fermentation in puncheons before being left on lees for around 11 months with no stirring. The combination makes for a savory and textural New Zealand Chardonnay with concentration and firmness.”
95 Points – Outstanding, Cameron Douglas MS “Fabulous bouquet with a range of scents from youthful, fresh, some new wood energy and spice with a core of fruit, to a sense of place with warm silty soils and whisps of salty air. Complex. On the palate a full-bodied wine with a satin touch, flavours of white nectarine and ripe grapefruit flesh, apples and a leesy mineral complexity. Great acid line and, judicious use of oak and core of fruit. Wood spice and tannins layer in mouthfeel, some tension and plenty of length. A lovely wine with best drinking from mid to late 2023 through 2029.”
94 Points (Top 100 New Zealand Wines 2022), JamesSuckling.com “This has a delicious array of passion fruit, grilled apricots, guava, toasted nuts and rosemary. Sea shells and matchstick, too. It’s full-bodied with a concentrated, flavorful and toasty palate. Tight phenolic structure, too. Lots going on. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”
