Description
When Stephen George first planted his three-hectare Ashton Hills vineyard in the early 1980’s, 12 different varieties went into the ground. Years of trials led to the removal of most of these vine types and today only Pinot Noir and Riesling remain on the Estate . This limited release Chardonnay is sourced from a small parcel of prized fruit from the Chapel Valley block, adjacent the old Piccadilly cemetery just down the road.
From the winery: “Commencing in 2017, we released the Ashton Hills Piccadilly Valley Chardonnay from fruit chosen off the Chapel Valley block adjacent to the old cemetery in Piccadilly Valley. The following year we added Chardonnay from the Quigley Block, a stones’ throw from the winery, so although no longer single vineyard, this chardonnay is crafted with texture and character, which are hallmark traits of the original AHV Chardonnays.”
About the 2021 release from the winemaker: “2021 was a glorious long, mild growing season resulting in beautifully perfumed and precise wines. A limited release chardonnay from two selected Piccadilly Valley sites. Ferment was sparked by indigenous yeasts and the wine aged in Burgundian oak (predominantly puncheons) both old and new for eight months. Flowering in Piccadilly Valley is relatively late owing to the cool climate, and we were lucky to flower during a warm window, however, combined with a dry season, yields were still compromised, as they were across the state. Although in short supply, quality was excellent and the clean fruit ripened in mild conditions showing good flavour and concentration.”
White peach and yellow nectarine along with jasmin, cashew nut and a hint of spice from the French oak on the nose. On the palate, yellow peach and stone fruits are carried across the palate by a mouth-watering acid drive finishing with a touch of lemon curd. A hint of pithy phenolics provides the wine with a lovely moorish texture. Very smart Chardonnay with remarkable depth of flavour .. it will be hard to resist but will reward up to 10 years in the cellar. 12.5% alc.

95 Points – James Halliday Australian Chardonnay & Cabernet Challenge 2022 “Lifted white peach, yellow nectarine and fresh pineapple marry with a hint of florals and spice from the French oak. The palate is fresh and tight, dominated by stone fruits, citrus and green melon. A bright acid profile and some textural phenolics are balanced with the subtle French oak which provides a softness and carries the flavours across the palate.”
93 points, Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion “Keeps its slim, trim Adelaide Hills structure while giving it flesh and substance in the form of generous grapefruit, lemon zest, honeydew melon, nectarine with hints of struck flint. The finish is full of acid tension and emerging texture. Put it away for a while before broaching.”
