Description
Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern end of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Over the past decade, the vineyard has built a reputation for chardonnay and pinot noir of great purity and character under its Single Vineyard and Single Block Release labels.
Led by winemaker Tom Carson, the Yabby Lake philosophy is to craft wines that speak of our site and the season in which they were grown. It’s the attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.
The producer’s vision and dedication has led to some exciting accolades in recent years, including their history-making Block 1 Pinot Noir – which was the first pinot noir ever to win the revered Jimmy Watson Trophy, after 52 years of the award.
The 2019 Pinot Noir has an incredibly perfumed and nuanced floral aroma.
A warm summer with resultant early harvest, produced wines that have great intensity, detailed structure and excellent depth of flavour.
The fruit was hand-picked, with each parcel handled separately in the winery. Hand sorted and carefully destemmed (25% whole bunches). Each parcel went into traditional oak open fermenters. The fermentation was hand plunged up to three times per day, the temperature of the fermentation peaked at 32 degrees celcius and the wine stayed on skins for 6-10 days, after which the wine was pressed into tight grain French oak puncheons (500L) for malolactic fermentation and maturation (12 months in oak, 20% new).
The palate is finely structured, concentrated and plush with a host of tightly packed red berry fruits. Polished and poised, the glossy sheen of subtle French oak is beautifully integrated in the background. The slightly chalky tannins have lovely finesse and delicacy, with a supple texture and incredible length.
95 Points, James Halliday “There’s a richness and ripeness of flavour perfectly reflecting the warmer vintage, without going over the top. Fragrant and floral, dark cherries spiced to the max, dabs of licorice, herbs and a smidge of wood char, with the oak neatly tucked in. Tannins have some emery board grip and the acidity is bright enough that you can enjoy it now or hold for a while.”
95 Points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review “Bright cherry-red hue. Bramble, black cherries and prosciutto on the nose. Medium-weight yet very intense, dark cherries, some mushroom notes alongside a smoked-meat character. Fine acids give a sense of freshness whilst a fine powder of tannins sets the line and carries the wine long and lingering into the finish. Plenty of cellaring potential here as well.”
