Description

One of Piedmont’s superstars… these are wines of extraordinary complexity and breathtaking richness. The spectacular offerings from Pira ’s vineyards in and around Serralunga d’Alba are among the more riveting examples.” – Robert Parker
Giampaolo Pira took over from his father Luigi and developed from grower to producer with their first Barolo in 1993. This first wine, and those for a few years after, saw the Pira style very much in the ‘modernist’ camp, with relatively short macerations in the ‘elephant’ version of the newfangled roto-fermenters, followed by time in new small French oak.
It was these powerful, dark, oaky yet still distinctively Serralunga wines, which were encouraged as the way ahead, by the likes of Parker and Marc de Grazia. Fast forward, and like some producers (not all) Pira has significantly modified this regime so the terroir of Serralunga can shine by using more traditional gentle maceration techniques and use of traditional large oak “ Botti” including for his Three Star crus of Serralunga, ‘Margheria’, ‘Marenca’ and it is only the great ‘Vigna Rionda’ that is matured in small French oak casks.

Estate grown vines from Roddino commune at 420 metres with south-west exposure for warmth for this variety to flourish. Fermentation and maceration for 2 weeks followed by maturation for 12 months in old French oak.

Rich expression, depth of dark plum fruit, roast meats with violet notes, dark plums and red fruits typical of high-class Barbera with a refreshing line of acidity and balance. Bargain to be had here .. Be snappy. Limited
Wine Spectator 90 points “A rich version, boasting blackberry, blueberry and earth flavors. The structure is bright and dense, and this persists on the lingering finish.“
Wine Advocate 90+ pointsThis is a streamlined and elegant wine with a tight bouquet of red fruit and earthy aromas. The 2016 Barbera d’Alba Superiore offers terrific intensity that remains impeccably balanced throughout. This is a lovely Barbera, and I am happily surprised because this vintage is not universally praised for the performance of this specific grape. The variety usually prefers extra warmth and sunshine. The team at Luigi Pira has done a top-notch job in a moderately cool vintage.”
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media 92 points  “The 2016 Barbera d’Alba Superiore will thrill Giampaolo Pira’s fans. Rich, layered and impeccable in its balance, the 2016 has so much to offer. Super-ripe dark plum, spice, bittersweet chocolate and new leather are all pushed forward in a potent, opulent Barbera that offers notable delineation to play off its more overt leanings.”
