Description
Leonardo Erazo is a rare talent making wines at ‘A los Vinateros Bravos’ (which translates as “to the brave vintners”).
He passionately works with historic vineyards over volcanic soil in the cool Itata region just inland from Conception in Southern Chile. Organic viticulture and natural wine making are used with Pais grapes to produce wines full of life, vibrancy, tension, freshness and joy.
The magic of the Itata begins with its special granitic soils (ancient 200 million-year-old batholith) home to dry-grown bush vines principally planted with the reds, Pais (Mission grape first planted in the area by conquistadores in the 1600s) and Carignan. Cool maritime climate and some altitude ensure long growing season, cold nights giving the wines extraordinary potential for developing the complexity needed for top shelf wine. Hand picked fruit from ancient vines (100 plus year old) grown on volcanic soils in the hills and the other on granitic soils. Wild yeast fermentation, no additions apart from minimal sulphur.
These seriously gorgeous medium bodied wines are fragrant, high toned riot of red fruits and minerality. They remind me a little of high quality, high toned, lifted expression of Pinot Noir or Cru beaujolais. The Granitico is slightly more red fruited but both cool climate alpine wines are delicious vibrant expressions. Minuscule production. These are bargains for quality and value.
100% Pais variety, 100 year old bush vines, 12.5% alcohol. This wine is grown exclusively on Granite rocky soils.
Gorgeous wine lifted delicate perfume brimming with raspberries, strawberries with fine grained tannins and a long finish with more-ish minerality/tar characteristic of the soil.
