Description
“I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound … an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
“.. is easily as good as many other producers’ serious Barolos at twice the price..” Max Allen, The Australian.
For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo. The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.
“Perbacco” translates from italian as “for Bacchus” – this is Vietti’s fine offering to the Wine God. The Perbacco is made from 100% Nebbiolo parcels all planted in the Barolo region from vines (average 35 years old) from Barolo sites : Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. Fruit selection here was more open and approachable than that selected for Barolo followed by 2 years maturation in Slavonian oak botti cask. Luca gives this extraordinary Perbacco all the love and attention in the vineyard with the same yields, vinification and aging period as for their Barolo Castiglione.
The grapes for this wine are grown in various selected vineyards sites mostly in the Barolo area and a minor part in Barbaresco. The vineyards soil is made of marl (lime stone in combination with clay). Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 3/4 weeks at controlled temperature (28°-32°C). Then we have the malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. Each parcel is processed and aged separately until when they select the ones will be included for the blend of Perbacco or the ones that will keep ageing to become Barolo Castiglione (excluding the parcels from Barbaresco).
About this wine from the winemaker “Quite intense and generous fruity nose (red berries) along with floral and spicy notes, a hint of menthol and hard candy. On the pallet medium bodied, showing notable intensity while retaining an essentially mid-weight style. Strong, intense, and quite powerful when young, evolving to a complex and elegant, very well-balanced wine with ageing. The tannins are harmoniously integrated in the fruit structure of the wine. Long lasting aftertaste with good freshness. “
92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media “The 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is another terrific entry-level wine from Vietti. In this vintage, the Perbacco is especially fine. Sweet dried cherry, herbs, mint, crushed flowers, anise and orange peel grace this striking, alluring Nebbiolo. There’s tons of depth and sheer pedigree, things that have not always been present in recent editions. For years, Perbacco was a very serious wine – some might say almost too serious – for its peer group. Then Vietti pivoted to a simpler style. With the 2020, Perbacco seems to once again be a wine that overdelivers, big time. Quite frankly, the 2020 Perbacco is more satisfying than many Barbarescos and Barolos I tasted this year.”
92 Points, Wine & Spirits “Intensely fragrant, with scents of rose petal and mandarin orange, this wine opens into high-toned red-cherry flavors that seem infused with floral freshness. A cool, stony undertone grounds the lively fruit.”
92 points, James Suckling “This is a fresh and fruit-forward nebbiolo with notes of raspberries and cherries, orange peel and chocolate. Some dried flowers, too. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and racy with ripe but taut, compact tannins that run the whole length of the wine. Well-crafted. Long and even.”
Generous, delicious baby ‘Barolo’ here depth of fruit, tannins are ripe, silky (and typically for Nebbiolo) are palate coating. The acidity is poised and gives added length. This is a fabulous rendition!
