Renowned for superior quality and a permanent spot on the wine lists of many famous restaurants around the world, Diebolt-Vallois counts as one of the absolute top domains on the Côte des Blancs.
The Diebolts started producing their own champagne as far back as the early 19th century. Jacques Diebolt assumed the helm in 1959. His marriage to Nadia Vallois gave the estate both its second name and its additional vineyards.
One reason for the extraordinary character and quality of Diebolt’s wines is undoubtedly the magnificent collection of vineyards located in some of the most favored sectors of Cramant, as well as additional holdings in Chouilly, Cuis and Epernay. These vineyards include some very old vines which Diebolt uses for his top cuvées.
The elder generation has now largely handed the reigns to their children Arnaud and Isabelle. Isabelle is married to Jean-Paul Hébrart, so this is very much a family committed to the expression of grower Champagne. It is Isabelle that focuses her perfectionist tendencies towards raising the bar that her parents have set. The family has 11 hectares of vines mostly across the northern section of the Cotes de Blancs, with a smattering of enviable holdings elsewhere.
The wines of Diebolt-Vallois are very expressive of terroir. They have a purity of flavour, a raciness and an ability to age well, so it is no wonder that the house is among the most respected in the Cote des Blancs. Their style is well suited to enjoying with food, and the wines can be found on the lists of prestigious restaurants around the world. Considering everything they encompass, the wines also offer excellent value.
Slender, precise, and elegant, Diebolt’s champagnes are archetypes of the style from the northern Côte des Blancs. They can achieve a stunning complexity, as well as offering extreme cellaring potential. Fleur de Passion is among the best champagnes found in the entire region.
This wine is 100% Chardonnay produced from Cuis, Chouilly and Justice (Epernay). This release is a blend of 2015, 2016 and 2017 (4 g/l) – as always, the very elegant nose suggests green apples and white flowers. On the palate, the wine is both creamy and firm, with a fine mineral structure. The flavours evolve with more white flowers, green apples, minerals, and lemon zest, and the long finish is carried by lively acidity and the velvety, persistent mousse. Hard to imagine anything more refreshing, this is quite superb and seriously great value for the quality!
