Description
2009 was a good vintage in the Barossa. Teusner only selects the best vineyard blocks for his FG range. In 09 they chose a block from the Marananga sub-region – incredible intensity, structure and balance from very old vines lying on a loamy east-facing slope studded with ironstone.
From the winemaker …”As always it gets the Rolls Royce treatment in the winery – the fruit is harvested by hand and fermented in open vats with regular pump-overs before heading to barrel. We use 50% new French oak and the balance is a blend of seasoned French & American. Post-elevage the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.”
100% Shiraz. Rich and opulent with intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, Satsuma plum with splashes of mulberry high tones. Hints of dark chocolate, deep-set Asian spice, licorice, fruitcake and dark cherry appear from the glass with a waft of well-judged, classy vanillin oak.
Sumptuous and textured in the mouth with beautifully detailed, ripe black-fruits flowing seamlessly across the palate. Blackberry, dark plum and macerated black cherry fruits are lifted by a waft of jasmine blossom before powering through the mid-palate. Hints of five spice, fruitcake, dark chocolate, licorice and judicious spicy oak provide a complex interplay and the finish has great carry, balance and purity.
93 points Gary Walsh The Wine Front … “The Big Boy from Teusner in the Big Bottle. Blackberry, tar, nougat oak, mint and eucalyptus. It’s full bodied, big and black with ample tarry Barossa fruit, full grainy tannin and juicy, squeezed blackberry acidity. Plenty of everything. Needs a bit of time. Drink 2015-2025+”
93 Points James Halliday “Righteous is always the best single vineyard wine of the vintage, and it certainly needs more time, as the back label suggests. Its vivid colour is a great opening stanza, but from here on the wine runs on the principle that if more is good, most is best. The quality is high, the question is of style, and in turn alcohol and tannins. Compromise points.” RRP $160
