Description
Paringa Estate is one of the jewels of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula wine region, consistently making some of the nation’s leading examples of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay.
Founder and owner, Lindsay McCall, established the vineyard in 1985. He is lauded as one of the region’s handful of pioneers. He bought an old north-facing orchard and planted The Paringa vineyard. At an elevation of 140 metres it curls around the landscape like a vinous amphitheatre, sheltered from the harsh southwesterly winds. The deep, rich volcanic soils give power, flavour and structure to the wines. The vines are reaching their peak of maturity too, and this is a crucial factor in producing wine of the highest quality. In 2007, Paringa Estate was awarded the innaugral “Best Winery in Australia,” in the ‘James Halliday’s Wine Companion’ book – an astonishing achievement for someone with no formal training in viticulture or winemaking.
The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range. In recent years Paringa has renewed its focus in ensuring the Peninsula range over delivers on quality.
“The quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best” – James Halliday
Fruit for these wines is sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with the emphasis on lively fruit.
In the winery berries were de-stemmed and co-fermented with 5% viognier in two-tonne open fermenters. It was then aged for 11 months in seasoned French oak barriques. This is a classic fine cool climate shiraz.
A bouquet of spicy blackberry fruit along with lifted floral viognier aromatics which lead onto a fruit driven palate of black fruits, black pepper and fine grained tannins and silky texture. A medium bodied wine with texture and power but with a fineness that reflects its cool climate origin.

95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday’s 2022 Australian Wine Companion “Fruit sourced from various peninsula sites, co-fermented with 5% viognier and aged 11 months in used French barriques. A vibrant garnet/purple hue; a core of ripe plums, with a flash of cloves, cinnamon, all warm spices and florals. The palate is savoury, with an appealing succulence bolstered by supple tannins and terrific freshness. It seems vintage ’19 suits shiraz from this region.”
91 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “All the Paringa Estate wines are so neat; so well grown and made. This is centred with cherry-plum flavour but the edges toss peppercorn, deli meat, apricot skin and cedar characters into the mix, and in the most engaging of ways.”
