Description
Award winning family owned and operated boutique winery Frankland Estate is located in Frankland River, the coolest and most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia. Warm days, cool nights (maritime influenced by the proximity to the Great Southern Ocean – means milder summers and winters) optimum ripening conditions, sustainable organic practices and a pristine pollution free environment are all contributing factors to the fine wines it produces.
Fruit for this wine was sourced from three different locations in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. A combination of the original 1988 ‘Houghtons’ Clone plantings as well as the newer Hermitage Clone 470. Organic certification achieved on these vineyards since 2009.
This wine is 94% Syrah with 4% Viognier and 2% Mourvèdre. 20% whole bunches are included, carefully sourced from among two blocks where the stems turn yellow early. The perfume from these leaps out of the glass and the tannins give a sense of width, with gentle chewiness. 45% of the blend is from the 1988-planted winery block. 49% is 470 clone which brings more complexity and another dimension to the tannin profile. The 470 also reaches perfect ripeness at slightly lower sugar levels, which serves the restrained balance of this wine. Mourvèdre and Viognier add complexity of flavour and texture while Syrah remains the hero. Our aim is delicacy with power. The wine was matured for 14 months in 3,500-litre foudre and a few additional 500-litre puncheons. 14.5% Alc
About this vintage from the winemaker: “2021 was really positive for Syrah. Everything looked good, the crop was a healthy size and everything ripened beautifully. We picked in April, pretty late but the fruit was aromatically charged with lots of spice and pepper. Considerable dedication to viticulture has in turn is allowing us to make the Syrah we are making today. ”
97pts Ray Jordan ” Small crop and small production, so this has to be on your shopping list. It is quite different from the syrah styles made ten years ago and reflects the heightened attention to improve the vineyard while exploring new clones. This one is largely the Houghton clone but there is also 42% clone 470 with the exciting clone 174 planned for later releases. The aromatics are heightened by the inclusion of viognier and mourvèdre. It is such a wonderfully fragrant and perfumed wine with that underlying regional ironstone character complementing. There is so much vibrancy and energy here – an exciting direction for Frankland Estate.”
‘I love the direction we’ve taken with this wine, pursuing that Syrah style. The wholebunch parcels we’re getting are absolutely amazing – brilliant wines in their own right. The 470 clone has a lovely fruit profile and the big barrels are retaining brightness and uniqueness of site.’ – Brian Kent, winemaker.
A calm composed nose suggests great depth. Violets, cinnamon, peppercorns, smoke, stones, and dusty earth mingle with redcurrants, cherries and plums. The palate has todie-for weightlessness and is perfectly poised between a range of ripe, velvety fruits and savoury tones. The whole bunches and our ironstone soils conjure a slew of sweet and exotic spices threaded through the fine, ferrous tannins. Thoroughly compelling and cohesive from first sniff to the soaring finish.”
97 points, Ray Jordan, The Wine Pilot “This wonderful wine marks the continuing evolution of Syrah from Frankland Estate. It was a very good year with the cool ripening period allowing for excellent flavour build up. This is 94% Syrah, 4% viognier and 2% Mourvèdre. Each plays an important role in the final blend. The use of the 470 clone has brought a degree of perfume and elegance to the final wine that is quite beautiful. It’s spicy with a little regional ironstone and black pepper. Smoothly integrated and silky. The oak is deliberately muted with the use of 3500-litre foudres an important part. Outstanding wine.”
96 points, Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion “Yes, Frankland Estate enjoys its prestige as head of the riesling kingdom, but the reds are on a revolutionary path. Will they take the crown? A sneaky 4/2% viognier/ mourvedre added to this excellent, spicy, smoky, juicy, peppery wine. Plush fruit with all the best syrah attributes rising up, including beautiful, savoury and silky tannins.”
94 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “For starters, it’s silken. But it’s also characterful, and structured, and lengthy, and rich. It’s a fantastic wine. It tastes of leather and dark chocolate, bay leaves and blackcurrant, licorice root and eucalypt. It has a gravelly, almost minerally, perhaps smoky edge – whatever it is, it adds that bit extra. Now or later; this is beautiful.”
