Description
Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and seem to be getting better every year!
The man grows and makes a mean Pinot Noir, so it’s no surprise Barney uses the same grape to make his slinky and fleshy Mornington rosé. The fruit hails from a south facing Pinot Noir block in Merricks; handpicked, sorted and whole bunch pressed, the juice is steeped on its skins for a day before being moved into barrels for wild fermentation. A maturation of six months on lees followed the primary fermentation. A paler, more ochre hue than last year’s wine, yet still those telltale aromatics of rose, wild raspberry and pomegranate. The palate is bright, fresh and long with succulent red berry and aniseed before a crunchy finish. Definitely on song.
