Description
Toolangi Vineyard is owned by Gary & Julie Hounsell who have a clear and simple strategy; grow the highest quality Yarra Valley grapes and put them in the hands of the best winemaker for each varietal – Yering Station, Oakridge and Hoddles Creek make their wine. This has served Toolangi well and today it stands as one of the star wineries of the Yarra Valley – awarded the coveted Halliday 5 red star rating (top 3% of Australia’s premium wineries).
The clone for this wine is MV6 on own roots. The vines were planted in 1998 and this fruit was hand harvested from the “Reserve” section of the Pinot Noir block. Yields are restricted to 1 to 1.5 tonnes per acre.
Aged in French oak barriques for 12 months and made at Giaconda
98 points and included in Top Pinot Noirs for 2018 in James Halliday’s 2018 Australian Wine Companion “The Toolangi Pinots are all MV6 clone and matured in French oak, this with one-third each whole berry, whole bunch and crushed/destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented, matured for 18 months with 30% new oak. This takes a millisecond to imprint the bouquet and palate with its sheer intensity, complexity and length. Its siblings are very, very good (and very different), but this is in a league of its own. Spices and savoury, foresty notes are all important, but don’t imperil the fruit. A glorious salute to the vintage, and the very best grapes from the estate. “
