Description
Paringa Estate is one of the jewels of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula wine region, consistently making some of the nation’s leading examples of Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay.
Founder and owner, Lindsay McCall, established the vineyard in 1985. He is lauded as one of the region’s handful of pioneers. He bought an old north-facing orchard and planted The Paringa vineyard. At an elevation of 140 metres it curls around the landscape like a vinous amphitheatre, sheltered from the harsh southwesterly winds. The deep, rich volcanic soils give power, flavour and structure to the wines. The vines are reaching their peak of maturity too, and this is a crucial factor in producing wine of the highest quality. In 2007, Paringa Estate was awarded the innaugral “Best Winery in Australia,” in the ‘James Halliday’s Wine Companion’ book – an astonishing achievement for someone with no formal training in viticulture or winemaking.
The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range. In recent years Paringa has renewed its focus in ensuring the Peninsula range over delivers on quality.
“The quality of these wines are often equal to many other vineyards best” – James Halliday
Fruit for these wines is sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. These wines are an exceptional expression of the Mornington Peninsula style, with the emphasis on lively fruit.
The pinots from 2020 bear the hallmarks of a cool year. They have vibrant sweet red berry cherry flavours, and fine acid. The keynotes are delicacy and restraint. Fruit was 100% de-stemmed and fermented in 2.5 tonne open fermenters. The fruit spent an average of 21 days in the fermenter on skins. Maturation took place over 11 months on lees in French Oak barrels.
An expressive and fragrant nose, with maraschino cherry and spice aromas, leads onto a flavoursome palate with bright fruit, vibrant acid, and fine tannins.
Another winning Pinot for quality and value and dangerously drinkable!
Newly released … reviews for 2019:
93 points, Campbell Mattinson for James Halliday’s Wine Companion “We’re in business here. This set off the value meter straight away. Cherry-plum flavours with licks of spice, a slight toastiness, excellent fruit purity and a decent sling to the finish. Fresh, complex-enough and more. Delicious drinking.”
92 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “It seems like a good year for this wine. It’s vigorous, has light but positive grip and sappy acidity, bright red fruits, along with some spice and undergowthy kinds of things. Finish is tight and long, crunchy cranberry and maybe something like pomegranate. Great drinking.”
92 points, Huon Hooke, The Vine Press “There is no producer on the peninsula with a bigger reputation for pinot noir than Paringa Estate. Several equals perhaps, but Lindsay McCall has been kicking pinot goals for a very long time. This wine, assembled from various vineyards in the region, is a consistently great value these days. The 2019 has a relatively deep red/purple colour, bright and youthful; the bouquet fresh and alive, enshrining dark fruits, blackcurrant jubes, and lifted spice notes. It’s also bright and bold on the palate, youthfully vigorous and gently persuasive in its tannins, but balanced and very agreeable already. No hurry to drink it, but who’s cellaring pinot at this price-level? Drink it up!”
