Description
What started as a part time job to earn a few dollars during his university days turned into a committed obsession. Winemaker Michael Aylward honed his craft at his family owned winery, Kooyong, spending time out in the vineyard, in the winery and on the road and the net result was a desire to make this his career. Following the sale of Kooyong in 2003 the next chapter began back in business with his parents to form Ocean Eight taking on the role of Winemaker and General Manager. Mike undertook several study tours amongst the hallowed vineyards and cellars of Burgundy.
In 2011 he won the highly coveted “Young Gun Of Wine” award judged by eading wine writers Max Allen, Philip Rich and Nick Stock.
The Mornington Peninsula has become one of the most sought-after regions in Australia for the production of high quality Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
When defining what identifies the Ocean Eight wines, Mike Aylward always returns to two ideas he has worked on since the first release wine; how well are they going to match with food and will they best represent the climate and grape growing conditions of the Mornington Peninsula.
Therefore the Ocean Eight wines are lean, bright & tight with acid at the finish. These characters help the wines pair with food and age incredibly well. It is no coincidence that these characters are also intrinsic to the cool, maritime conditions of Mornington Peninsula vineyards, where the Aylward’s chose to grow grapes and make wines over 20 years ago.
100% estate grown fruit, wild ferments, destemmed 100% to showcase the delicacy of the fruit. Clones 114, 115 & MV6. Vines planted 1999. The vineyard is one of the most northerly on the Mornington Peninsula landmass. Clones are known as 114, 115 & MV6, planted in 1999. The top 30cm soil profile is made up of 20% sand, 65% silt
and 15% clay. These silty loams are also known as brown chromosols and are defined by their moderate fertility and water holding capacity.
From the winemaker “From 16 acres planted at Ocean Eight’s vineyard in Tuerong, a smaller than usual crop was picked in 2020. There is a lovely delicate bouquet of fresh picked light red fruits. To taste, there is the sensation of raspberries and red cherries supported by gentle tannins.” An exceptional growing season has delivered the goods in this fine Mornington Pinot.
97 points, Decanter Wine and Top Australian Wine of 2022 “Many Australian Pinot Noirs are rising in both quality and sophistication, but this offering is an outstanding improver. Having stepped beyond his family’s former winery, Kooyong, Michael Aylward’s Ocean Eight vineyard produces slender, almost shy Pinots that captures sure-footed balance with quiet confidence. This boasts firm ripe cherries, a hint of aged cherry wood, and a sprinkling of Chinese five-spice on a restrained, elegant palate. There is also great persistence and length in the flavours, which glide gracefully on fine tannins to a soft landing.”
This fine Pinot looks smart .. Mornington Pinot at its finest and bargain for quality and value here.
