Description
A small family owned Domaine in the heart of the Côte-d’Or in the village of Magny-les-Villers, just outside Nuits-St-Georges. With holdings on 14 titles in both the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits, across 19 acres farmed organically and vinified traditionally resulting in pure whites and muscular reds that age well. Champions of the Ladoix appellation at the foot of the hill of Corton, this is Burgundy with soul.
The domaine was founded over forty years ago with winemaking in the hands of Alex Cornu who took over from his father Claude in 2008, although Claude is very much still a strong presence in the cellar. After working at Vosne Romanee’s most famous producer Romanee Conti for several years Claude returned to the family estate and grew holdings from 3 acres to the current holding of 19 acres with vines in some fantastic sites including Savigny Le Beaune, Ladoix, Pernand Vergelesses and the flagship holding on the famous Grand Cru hill of Corton.
The vineyard practices are predominantly organic or “Lutte Raisonee” practices (organic in principal just without formal certification) and produce vibrant fruit of high quality and low yields. In the winery wild yeasts are used and all reds are 100% destemmed with a mixture of barrel age and maturation depending on the cuvee.
40 year old vines in Savigny Les Beaune form 2 plots in are Ez Connardises and Les Sacours. Cold Soak for 4 to 5 days pre fermentation, fruit 100% destemmed. Wild yeast ferment in open top vats with daily punching down for cap extraction. Gravity fed into Francois Feres barriques with a mix of 1/3 new and 2/3 1 & 2 year old for 18 months maturation.
Warmer growing season of 2018 has delivered a more approachable expression of Savigny Les Beaune ( regarded as one of the best value villages in the Cote D’Or) and this wine displays all hallmarks of classic red Burgundy with more concentration of darker fruits complimented by red forest fruits. Lovely focus, detail, balance with structure of ripe tannins. Needs some time.. unfurled gorgeously over 2 to 3 days. Vive La France!
