Description
“I can’t think of too many estates in Piedmont that have raised the bar higher than Vietti has over the last decade or so. Virtually every wine that emerges from these cellars is outstanding, and many are profound … an unprecedented level of consistency and quality across their entire range.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
“.. is easily as good as many other producers’ serious Barolos at twice the price..” Max Allen, The Australian.
For the past four generations, the Vietti family has been producing wine in Castiglione Falletto, a small village in the heart of the Langhe region of Piedmont, from their vineyards located across the five communes designated for the cultivation and production of Barolo. Over recent years Luca Currado-Vietti had taken over the winemaking direction from his late father Alfredo. The overall objective, to produce the highest quality wines, whilst retaining respect for the traditions of the specific appellations.
The Perbacco is made from 100% Nebbiolo parcels all planted in the Barolo region from vines (average 35 years old) from Barolo sites: Bricco Boschis, Liste, Brunella, Rocchettevino, Pernanno, Ravera di Monforte and Scarrone. Fruit selection here was more open and approachable than that selected for Barolo followed by 2 years maturation in Slavonian oak botti cask. Luca gives this extraordinary Perbacco all the love and attention in the vineyard with the same yields, vinification and aging period as for their Barolo Castiglione.
The grapes for this wine are grown in various selected vineyards sites mostly in the Barolo area and a minor part in Barbaresco. The vineyards soil is made of marl (lime stone in combination with clay). Alcoholic fermentation lasts around 3/4 weeks at controlled temperature (28°-32°C). Then we have the malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. Each parcel is processed and aged separately until when they select the ones will be included for the blend of Perbacco or the ones that will keep ageing to become Barolo Castiglione (excluding the parcels from Barbaresco).
2021 is here and it certainly is on form following a dream growing season. Sourced from predominantly 100% Barolo vineyards (usually younger vine than those directed to their flagship Barolo Castiglione) and in recent years there has been the inclusion of small parcel of younger vine Barbaresco fruit. The Perbacco is based on a core of Ravera (Novello) blended with: Bricco Ravera, Ginestra & Mosconi (Monforte d’Alba); Le Coste (Barolo), Costabelle & Meriame (Serralunga d’Alba) Briccolina & Briccho Boschis & Codana (Castiglione Falletto).
About this wine from the winemaker “Quite intense and generous fruity nose (red berries) along with floral and spicy notes, a hint of menthol and hard candy. On the pallet medium bodied, showing notable intensity while retaining an essentially mid-weight style. Strong, intense, and quite powerful when young, evolving to a complex and elegant, very well-balanced wine with ageing. The tannins are harmoniously integrated in the fruit structure of the wine. Long lasting aftertaste with good freshness. “
“2021 appears to be that rare year in which conditions were close to ideal .. gorgeous aromatics, beautiful, vibrant fruit and often exceptional balance.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous
Wine Enthusiast Magazine “This wine opens with an expressive nose, exuding macerated red cherries, dried roses and sweet and savory spices. The palate unfolds with rounded and lush loads of cherry, where well-integrated tannins create a harmonious structure, offering a delightful and balanced profile.”
