“Pierre Chermette has become one of the beacons of Beaujolais quality..” David Schildknecht, Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate, August 2008
The Chermette family were the first to embrace sustainable agricultural practices in Beaujolais. Cru beaujolais is a remarkable medium bodied red made from the Gamay grape, fragrant and juicy with succulence, depth and savoury length. Vissoux is the top rated Beaujolais producer in leading french guide, “Les Meilleurs Vins de France”.
Moulin a Vent is the Cru renowned for brooding, fuller bodied reds with power – more reminiscent of the northern Rhone.
The most revered cru wine of this producer and with good reason. Les Trois Roches is named for the three rocky parcels of vines from which it derives – Rochegrès, Roche Noire and La Rochelle. The average age of the vines in these sites is now 40-years-old. Pierre-Marie Chermette points out that La Rochelle, (which overlooks the famous windmill), brings structure, the east-facing Rochegrès contributes finesse and supple tannins, while the Roche Noire grapes bring liveliness, perfume and juicy fruit. One of the common features of these sites is the concentration of manganese in the soils that delivers the unmistakable mineral core to the wine. The 2016 is far more open and approachable than the 2015 was at the same stage. It is, nonetheless, a mineral bomb! Expect a pretty and perfumed nose of grenadine and red floral notes leading to a palate that is superfine-intense yet brilliantly balanced with red currant and blueberry fruits and loads of rocky, mineral freshness on the lingering finish. Although drinking really well now, this will certainly age well for at least five to ten years. Like the Fleurie, it is a wine that Burgundy lovers should load up on-it delivers the pleasure of many a village level wine for a fraction of the price.
93 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous “Brilliant magenta. Aromas of fresh cherry and blueberry are complemented by suggestions of violet, licorice and spicecake. Stains the palate with appealingly sweet, spice-accented dark fruit and floral pastille flavors that smoothly meld concentration and vivacity. Shows excellent clarity and mineral lift on the subtly tannic finish, which leaves notes of bitter cherry and five-spice powder behind.”
