Description
This beautiful estate is located in the south east of Chianti in Val d’Arno di sopra DOC, Pietraviva (the western and eastern hills along the Arno river between Florence and Arezzo)
Interesting history Gastone Bazzocchi (father and grandfather of the current owners) apparently swapped a flat in the city for the beautiful 400 acre property just after WWII (as the story goes no cash changed hands!) Organic farming of olives on property for 20 years has led to a path of sustainable viticulture without using chemical fertilisers for 10 years nor pesticides for 5 years.
Their Torrione (original estate wine made for 25 years) comprises 80% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Very low yielding vines (bulk of fine sangiovese fruit comes from the original Boggina vineyard planted in 1947, Casariccio, Lecceta, Asilo & Campaccio vineyard (planted close to Tower of Galatrona) followed by maturation 15mths in French oak barriques delivers fine structure, elegance and balance here. Viva Italia!
91 Points, Vinous Media Galloni: “The 2012 Torrione is seriously beautiful. Dark red cherry, plum, spice and mocha notes flesh out in a supple, radiant wine endowed with gorgeous depth and pure resonance. All the elements meld together in this gracious, juicy Sangiovese-based red from Petrolo. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out the blend.”
93 Points, James Suckling: “A very successful 2012 with a beautiful texture of ripe tannins plus cherry, chocolate and berry character. Full body and a silky texture. Outstanding harmony and balance. Drink now.”
