Description
Mount Mary Vineyard from Lilydale, in the heart of the Yarra Valley in Victoria was established in 1971 by legendary winemaker, the late John Middleton who was at the forefront of the resurgence of the Yarra as a premium wine growing district. Considered something of a maverick he was a fervent opponent of the Australian wine judging system and big, alcoholic, overblown red styles, preferring wines of highly individual character, purity of fruit, elegance and complexity – a trait more often found in Bordeaux than in Australian reds in those days. His Quintet wine (we love the association with music ensemble!) is based on five classic Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot has achieved mythical status among wine collectors. It is reknowned for ethereal elegance, vibrancy and balance, ripe velvety tannins, extraordinary complexity and longevity.

About the wines:-
Mount Mary Quintet 2012 – 42% Cabernet sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 17% Cabernet franc, 4% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot.
96 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Essence of blackcurrant. Bay leaves, licorice, tobacco and musky oak. One of those wines that seems to cascade through the mouth. Tremendous purity, freshness, elegance. Great release. Not much need be said. Pure velvet. Pure length. Drink : Now – 2032+”
Mount Mary Quintet 2013 – 49% Cabernet sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 15% Cabernet franc, 4% Malbec, 6% Petit Verdot.
95 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Yarra Valley cabernet blend. Masterfully done. Mount Mary Quintet doesn’t muck around here. It’s a classic style, take it or leave it. It’s architectural, sparse, built on the finest of bones, enduring. It shows notes of pencils and berries, tobacco and leafy herbs, but it’s the acid and the tannin, the slow inevitability of it. Come back in ten years. Drink : Now – 2035”
Mount Mary Quintet 2014 – 48% Cabernet sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 15% Cabernet franc, 2% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot.
96 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “..Perfumed and pretty with almost succulent small black and red berries, a little vanilla and violet, cedar, tobacco and pencil cases. Medium bodied, delicious boysenberry/blackcurrant flavour, cool minerally acidity, mouth-filling but ultra fine gravelly tannin, that superb Cabernet perfume again, and extreme length closing with an array of red and black berries and refreshingly pure rain-washed acidity. What a wine. Drink : 2020 – 2044+”
Mount Mary Quintet 2015 – 44% Cabernet sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 16% Cabernet franc, 6% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot.
97+ points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “.. I don’t think MM Quintet has ever been in better form than it is right now … It’s all just so, and first and last impressions are of a wine of supreme balance, perfect ripeness, and phenomenal length. Red and black fruits, violets, pencil shavings and sweet earthiness. Medium bodied, supple yet gravelly tannin, density and thickness, delivered with no heaviness, cool fresh raspberry acidity, and *that* finish, infused with black tea. It drinks beautifully now, and most likely in another thirty years. A new high-water mark for Mount Mary Quintet, I feel. Drink : 2020 – 2045+”
Mount Mary Quintet 2016 – 6% Cabernet sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 20% Cabernet franc, 5% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot.
97 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “Such perfume. Such finesse. It’s a flat out joy to smell, and to taste. Violets, cedar, red and black fruits, tobacco, pencils, marzipan and aniseed. Just into medium-bodied, well-etched and sure-footed, much like the kitten, who’s tongue the tannin sports. Delightful flavour of small red (mainly) and black berries, deft and precise, with a finish that’s long and crisp, which leaves no doubt about the quality of this wine. Line and length. Fragrance and poise. Subtle, yet thoroughly persuasive. Gentle rasp of tannin cleans the mouth. It’s a rare bird, this Cabernet. Drink : 2019 – 2038+”
