Description
Kir Yianni (greek for Mr John!) is the cutting edge winemaker in the modern Greek wine scene. In the 90’s Yianni Boutari sold his share in Boutari the oldest and most established wine name in Greece. Over the decades Yianni acquired his own prime vineyards. In 1994 they released their first wines and with his son Stellios they have championed “Xinomavro” the red grape of Greece grown in Naoussa (Alpine county of Macedonian Greek mountains) and Amyndeon. They have done extensive research and development, clonal selection with xinomavro and they have gone from strength to strength. This grape is regarded as the “Pinot” or the “Nebbiolo” of Greece for its fragrance, freshness and tannin profile. Light in colour and body it has intense and complex aromas, naturally high acidity and rich tannins – an ageworthy, savoury and structured wine. Grapes are hand-picked and selected on a double sorting table prior to crush. Fermentation in Stainless steel.
About this wine… From the vineyards of Agios Panteleimon within the Amyndeon Appellation in Northwestern Greece. Sprawling at an altitude of 600-700m on poor sandy soil, the vineyards reach yields that rarely exceed 40 hl/ha. The area is marked by cold winters and warm summers, but the four surrounding lakes create a unique mild mesoclimate. As a result, there is high fruit concentration and ripeness with exquisitely complex and rich aromas.
This fine medium bodied blend of Merlot 50%, Xinomavro 25%, Syrah 25% shows juicy red forest-fruits with some black cherry characters and more-ish savoury tannins balanced by refreshing freshness. Delicious mountain wine here. Heavenly with pasta, vegetarian dishes and barbeque delights. 13.5% Alc. Under Screwcap
From the winemaker: “Paranga is a refreshing and jammy combination: a supple Merlot in the background with a touch of a very spicy Syrah under the spell of a light and more easy-to-drink Xinomavro. Its ruby red color and herbal undertones are alluring. Its remarkable acidity gives rise to a complex bouquet of cinnamon, clove, and green pepper, and a long finish. It is made to be consumed young.”
