“The sheer quality of the wines he makes is equalled only by his consistency” James Halliday.
2020 – WINNER – BEST IN SHOW and 97 points at Decanter International Wine Awards for 2023!
When I met winemaker Bruce Dukes from Domaine Naturaliste I was bowled over by how striking every wine was that I tasted in his lineup … A rare occurrence when you’re tasting wines every day.
The success did not happen by accident. He has an intimate knowledge of all the terroirs of Margaret River after spending 25 years honing his craft with leading Margaret River producers such as Pierro wines. He is a trained agronomist and has a Masters in viticulture and Oenology from U.C. Davis … he also worked for 4 years at Neibaum Coppola in Napa, USA. Bruce seeks freshness of fruit, perfume, texture, overall balance, restraint with low to moderate alcohol in all his beautiful wines. Domaine Naturaliste is named after the northern most Cape of Margaret River, Cape Naturaliste, where the winery is situated. Minuscule production of top shelf wines across the board.
The Rebus Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine crafted to stay true to its heritage as an icon of the Margaret River region. First released in 2012 it was awarded 98 points by James Halliday and included in his Top 100 that year!
About the wine from the winemaker: “Rebus Cabernet Sauvignon is a wine crafted to stay true to its heritage as an icon of the Margaret River region. Our first release was in 2012. Since then, Rebus has made friends with people and proteins across Australia. An intricate tapestry of glazed cherries, violets and graphite, deftly woven into a palate laden with flavours of red currants, cacao nib and plum skin. Bristling tannin on the entry and a tensile core of liquorish, black berries and slate, culminates in a persistent and ever-changing mineral finish.” Bruce Dukes
95 points, Cassandra Charlick, The Wine Pilot “There’s no spice rack of Malbec, Merlot and friends here. 100% Cabernet from 24-year-old vines matured for a full year in 35% new oak. It is still shy but oh so stunning. Fragrant and heady, a spiced, woody note frames the fruit with incense of frankincense and myrrh. This is pure Cabernet with lashings of blackcurrant, ribbon-like tannins and oodles of fruit on a bed of oak. The oak, firmly a support act, not the show’s star. There’s a fluidity of motion, whirring around firm, ripe and fine-grained tannins. It’s early days, but they already leave the impression of melting onto the palate while the long, lithe line of acid retains its poise. This has it all: it’s juicy and firm, generous while upholding tension. Potpourri and graphite pencil, sumac, dried rose petals, rushed black fruit, salted plum, crackling nori and jet black, fertile soil laced with crushed gravel. There’s a freshness of fruit, too – boysenberry and lingonberry, raspberry juice finished with a lick of black olive flesh. A wine of its place with so much going on in its youth and much more to come as it matures.”
