Description
Crawford River wines from Henty in South Western Victoria are crafted exclusively from hand-picked and selected fruit grown at their estate vineyard, whereupon they are vinified and bottled on site. The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to detail. Patience and time are of the essence in their winery.
Winemaker Belinda Thompson has been honing her craft with Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2015 is excellent.
From the winery about the 2016 release: “As usual, each individual block was separately hand picked and fermented in open fermenters. De-stemmed only (no crush). 5-8 day cold soak was carried out prior to fermentation. The wines were then pressed to tank and settled prior to being racked to barrel for malolactic fermentation. 25% of this Cabernet was left in the fermentation vessel and sealed for a period of extended maceration of 8 weeks prior to pressing. No additions. No added acid, not fined or cold stabilised. Coarse filtered to bottle. Tartrates may have settled, which is a natural and normal process. 2 years in French Oak – mostly old. Bottled in October 2018”
“There is a beautiful dark fruit spectrum to this wine, starting with blood plum and moving through to liquorice and cassis. The palate offers great complexity, weight and texture. It delivers dark fruits, as seen on the nose, while unravelling to display more complex flavours of dried florals, graphite, cedar and bay leaf. The concentration of the year is evident throughout the wine, with the natural acidity lending definition and finishing with terrific persistence.
93 points, Jeni Port for Halliday’s 2021 Australian Wine Companion “Stays true to the Crawford River philosophy, combining attractive, bottle-aged maturity, quality fruit not in need of too much massaging in the winery and a lingering, sophisticated savouriness in the glass. Tilled earth, undergrowth and Aussie bush notes bring a firm varietal footprint, in tandem with blackberries, blackstrap licorice, spice and smoked meats. Rolls smoothly over the tongue, aided by a ripe tannin flow.”
91 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Ye olde faithful from Crawford River. This one is rich and full, a wine with dark fruit and prune/nut/raisin notes amongst plum, brined black olive and leafy, minty herbal notes. Palate and perfume match well here. A flowing, lush red with soft tannin, bright acidity and a sense of dried, stewed fruit in tow. A sense of maturity is part of this wine’s DNA. It’s a bolder, fuller red and gives drinkers a window into generosity from that site. It will titillate many for its impact.”
