Michel Torino is a premium winery located in Cafayate in the Upper Calchaqui Valley of Argentina ‘s northern region of Salta. home to the highest vineyards in the world at altitudes of 2300 3311 metres. Semi arid climate with warm days and cold nights is ideal for viticulture. Intense UV light with altitude results in thick grape skin development to protect against sun.
Lovely rich ripe fruit (Made with some carbonic maceration which gives the wine aromatic lift) fined grained tannins and a more ish savoury tarriness with a hint of licorice. Gorgeous purity of fruit and length of flavour. Very different in style to a French madiran (south west France) where the tannat variety is traditionally made in a more tannic. astringent fashion. My favourite red from our recent Argentine tasting.
The ’08 vintage was recently awarded BEST RED WINE IN THE WORLD in the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2010 among nearly 7000 wines from 49 different countries. The 2009 release is a terrific follow up the growing seasons are very consistent in Salta thanks to the Andes ( create a rain shadow so no rain during harvest) RRP $33
