Description

Flametree Wines has had a meteoric rise to become one of the star wineries of the Margaret River wine region. Under the skilled winemaking of Cliff Royle (ex-Voyager Estate) the quality of wines are impressive across the board.
James Halliday … “Flametree, owned by the Towner family (John, Liz, Rob and Annie), has had extraordinary success since its first vintage in 2007. The usual practice of planting a vineyard and then finding someone to make the wine was turned on its head: a state-of-the-art winery was built, and grape purchase agreements signed with growers in the region. Show success was topped by the winning of the Jimmy Watson Trophy with its 2007 Cabernet Merlot. If all this were not enough, Flametree secured the services of winemaker Cliff Royle.

About this wine from the winemaker:  “75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon.  Individual harvests were crushed, chilled and pressed into tank for a 3-4 day settling. All batches were then racked and warmed before either going into barrel to undergo wild ferment or inoculated using selected yeast stains. 43% of the juice was barrel fermented wild with grape solids, 5% of the barrels were new with the remainder being older, large format oak. A small portion of whole berries were added to the ferment to give further texture and complexity to the final blend.

The nose shows fragrant lychee, lime, lemon grass and stone fruit. The lychee notes and white nectarine provide a burst of flavour on the palate. The grape solids and barrel ferments add nice savoury notes and minerality. Overall a great combination of fruit flavours, fine acidity and a textural finish are the hallmarks of this excellent Sauvignon Blanc Semillon.”

A cracking Margaret River white here .. gorgeous depth of fruit, complexity and balance. Absolutely delicious!

95 points, Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine CompanionWell, this comes across as rather classy. Nothing overt, just a core of juicy, zesty fruit – more citrus than tropical – with a hint of fresh basil and an attractive wet stone character, a bit zinc-like. Talc-like texture to the acidity and there’s a daub of creaminess, too, which builds some volume to an otherwise tight and bright wine. Refreshingly drinkable on its own but particularly good with asparagus dishes.”
