**WINERY OF THE YEAR 2023 – HALLIDAY’S AUSTRALIAN WINE COMPANION 2023 **

The trajectory of ascension of their wines has been nothing short of breathtaking, with quality rising emphatically with every season…”

Tyson Stelzer for 2023 Halliday Wine Companion.

Pooley Wines has an historical property and two separate vineyards in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. The Coal River Valley has developed a worldwide reputation, and is ideally suited, for the production of cool-climate wines such as Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay. Members of the Pooley family have been actively involved in the business for three generations. Their longstanding passion and commitment to fine wine are your assurance of un-compromising quality.
Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when the late Denis and Margaret Pooley planted ten rows of Riesling and seven rows of Pinot Noir on their 16-hectare farm at Cooinda Vale in the Coal River Valley in southern Tasmania. In 2003, John Pooley, son of Denis and Margaret, and his wife Libby bought Belmont Lodge, a heritage-listed Georgian home on the outskirts of Richmond. They have been lovingly renovating this second Pooley Wines Coal River Valley property, and have planted vines on nearby Butchers Hill. In 2007 the first vintage of Pinot was produced.

As well as this year’s Winery of the Year accolade, they have 5 Red Stars from James Halliday and Tasmania’s Winery and Pinot Noir Producer of the Year in 2012, Pooley is also Tasmania’s first and only fully accredited Environmentally Certified Sustainable Vineyard in Tasmania.

About this vintage from the winemaker:  “The Butchers Hill Vineyard located in Richmond at the historic Belmont Lodge was established in 2003. The vineyard is a prominent feature to the Richmond landscape as it protrudes from the borders of the town. The steep north facing slope of this site starting from 30m-100m above sea level means that it receives some very long sunlight hours, protection from cold southern winds and increased drainage of soils. The ferricrete attribute of the soils not only hold heat and water longer as they are darker but the iron oxide also interacts with the production of flavonoids in the fruit and typically produces wines that are complex and robust. There are currently 6ha of vine planted on this property in total.

The fruit was then handpicked, chilled to 5 degrees then whole-bunch pressed to tank, cold settled and racked to barrel for ferment. An inoculated barrel ferment (PDM strain) in 5-year-old French oak puncheons for a total of 12 days with 5 months maturation on fine lees in oak prior to bottling.

The season started with consistent spring rainfall that built a solid foundation with strong, healthy canopies and bountiful bunch numbers. Mild conditions continued through to summer with a few days reaching over 25C. The start of Autumn provided glorious sunshine days and cool oceanic evenings hailing the start of veraison. The vacant heat returned shortly thereafter to kickstart what would be a long and late vintage. The fruit was in absolutely no rush to be picked and showed its relaxed appreciation through integrated and balanced phenolic profiles.

A weighted, resplendent riesling with aromas of citrus blossom, yuzu, desert lime, and mineral on the nose. Preserved lemon, grapefruit pith, under-ripened nashi pear follow on the palate. A slight note of talc, reminiscent of the Mosel-Saar, persists with a full mouth-feel and persistent acid profile.”

95 points, Tyson Stelzer – Hallidays 2023 Australian Wine Companion “A cool summer and a sunny autumn with cool nights are an exciting recipe for riesling. Crystalline purity of radiant, mineral acidity drives a core of pure lemon, lime and Granny Smith apple. I love the way old oak puncheons (rather than sugar) have been masterfully deployed to tone structure and build the finish. Line and length are unrelenting, promising a huge future.”

96 Points, Stuart Knox – The Real Review “Pale and vibrant lemon-yellow tints the glass. Lemon blossom and karkalla aromatics. Serious concentration and intensity of fruit here, it’s melded onto a taut saline-mineral acid line that drives it very long. A suppleness of fruit brings some middle-palate texture then tapers to a fine rapier finish.”
