Description

James Kellie (formerly of Howard Park) has had extraordinary success in a relatively short time, winning trophies galore and for 10 consecutive years the elusive 5 red star rating (the highest recognition possible from James Halliday’s, Wine Companion awarded to Australia’s top 5% of wineries for “a consistent record of excellence”).

The Great Southern wine growing region of WA provides unmatched versatility and quality for a winemaker. From the elegance and delicacy of cool climate Riesling to the restrained intensity of Denmark Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The texture and richness of Mount Barker Cabernet and the structure, weight and complexity of Frankland River Shiraz. Harewood Estate showcases this potential in a range of wines produced from grapes grown in select, low yielding vineyards.

The grapes for this wine were sourced from one of the few plantings of riesling in the maritime, cool climate Denmark sub region of Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region.

Only the finest, more pristine, “free-run” juice was used in the production of this wine resulting in a palate of outstanding finesse, free from the harsh, phenolic characters and deeper colours associated with grape pressings.

A long, cool ferment in stainless steel tanks, minimal fining and the use of screw caps are all further steps towards capturing the inherent delicacy of this cool climate variety.

A brilliant, exceptionally pale straw colour with youthful green tinges. The wine exhibits intense floral and citrus with hints of passionfruit enhanced by an underlying spicy lift.

A seamless palate, with initial flavours of mandarin and grapefruit leading to a sherbet mid-palate of passion fruit and spice finishing with classic mouth-watering citrus. The fine structure is testament to the care taken during this wines production.

94 points, Erin Larkin for Hallidays 2022 Australian Wine Companion “Very different from Harewood’s Mount Barker Riesling, and rightly so. This Denmark iteration is grassy, herbaceous and more floral; the acid sits outside the fruit on the palate, it’s not countersunk into it. There is a tingly, sherbet vivacity about this wine. It is more obvious than some of the others in this range, but a brilliant example of why Great Southern rieslings are so great.

91 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “Very floral aromas, honeysuckle and jasmine, sweet citrus in there too. Clean and clear in the palate with a good sense of ‘energy’. It’s intense and zippy in the palate, races along and finishes in a puff of talc and minerally things. Good shape and velocity. It’s refreshing and tart and dry. Good gear.”
