Description
Award winning Frankland Estate is located in Frankland River, the coolest and most isolated wine-growing region in Western Australia. Warm days, cool nights (maritime influenced by the proximity to the Great Southern Ocean – means milder summers and winters) optimum ripening conditions, sustainable organic practices and a pristine pollution free environment are all contributing factors to the fine wines it produces.
The Frankland Estate Isolation Ridge Vineyard Riesling is consistently ranked among the best in Australia and has won widespread critical acclaim.
This wine was made from 100% Riesling grown in the Isolation Ridge vineyard at Frankland Estate. Riesling vines from two different clones were planted in 1988 on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes with duplex soils of ironstone gravel over a clay sub-soil. A number of trellis systems are used through the vineyard. The vineyard is situated 256 meters above sea level. The cool nights and long slow ripening periods typical of the Frankland River region allow maximum flavour development while maintaining the distinctive vibrant acidity for which Rieslings from this region are renowned. The vineyard is farmed according to certified organic principles and this is reflected in the clarity and complexity of the pristine fruit from the vineyard.
The wine leaps out of the glass with perfumed white citrus florals, spice and grapefruit. A real generosity and poise on the palate. Ripe juicy limes upfront, with a crisp acidity that carries the fruit all the way into a long saline, mineral finish. Elegant yet powerful, it builds layers in the mouth as the wine opens up. Consistent with the now well-established Isolation Ridge style this wine reflects both the low-yielding, dry growing conditions of this site. The balance of pristine fruit flavours and defining acidity result in an exceptional wine that can be enjoyed now or cellared with the confidence as it will continue to develop further complexity for many years to come.
97 points, James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com, April 2020 “This exudes such pristine life from the glass with elegant, floral notes and fresh lime juice, sliced yellow grapefruit, green apples and powdery bath salts. The palate has a sleekly defined and attractively pithy core of lime-juice flavors with an exceptionally long finish that holds such juicy, pristine citrus-fruit flavors. So long. From organically grown grapes. Drink over the next decade or more.”
Wine of the Year – West Australian Good Food Guide Awards 2020 “A cut above all the others in 2020, though only by degrees in a field of outstanding wines. It’s a wine that is not only excellent in every sense of fine wine paradigms, including balance, persistence, detail, but is down right delicious and offers wild drinkability.
It’s a piercing, powerful, laser-like expression of white wine with a buffer of fantastic chalky-mineral character. There’s a cavalcade of citrus, just ripe green apple and light floral things in the mix too. Blisteringly fresh across the palate, thirst-slaking and yet complex, the wine is glorious at every sip. Cellar with impunity, too.”
94 points, Ned Goodwin, James Halliday 2021 Wine Companion “Hewn of fruit from a marginal ironstone-lain site, this is a different kettle of fish to the pungent power of Poison Hill. More linear. Greater tension, perhaps, while exhibiting a flavour spectrum of grapefruit pulp, lemon zest, fennel and lemongrass. More citric, herbal and wet stone slaty. No less intense, but less generous in the here and now. Bodes well for a bright, long future.”
