Description
“What I love about the wines is that Jennie Gardner and Colin McBryde can pour just as much passion into producing serious wines with serious labels and serious sense of terroir (Adelina) as they do producing a range of fun, everyday drinking wines with gloriously garish pulp fiction labels …” Max Allen, The Future Makers
The Adelina vineyards are situated in Spring Farm Valley, just south of the township of Clare in SA. Their neighbours include the vineyards of Wendouree, Aberfeldy and Sevenhill Cellars. The small Adelina plantings were originally established around 1910; mostly Shiraz and Grenache with small plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is right next door to Birk’s Wendouree so we know the terroir is good! The Gardner family has owned the Spring Farm Estate, which is the site of both the Adelina winery and vineyards, since 1986. Prior to the inception of Adelina Wines in 2000, the property was managed by Will and Elaine Gardner, and the fruit was sold to Tim Adams. In 2002, Col McBryde and Jen Gardner, Will and Elaine’s daughter, took over responsibility for the vineyards and launched Adelina wines which are made exclusively from the Estate vineyards. The pair has been involved in winemaking and research since the mid-90s.
Adelina’s Polish Hill River Riesling is drawn from Lyn and Robert Jaeschke’s Hill River Estate, planted in 2000 at 460 metres above sea level on grey-brown loam over shale and sandy limestone. The fruit was destemmed and crushed before pressing, then the free-run juice was settled, racked and fermented to dryness.
Bone dry and just shy of 11%, it’s a more restrained release than the exhuberant Watervale. Col notes that his wines from this site are getting finer every year, and this is a great example of the progression. Laser-guided wet stone, jasmine and lime skin on the nose give rise to a tightly coiled palate wrapped around a crystalline spine of acidity. An Australian Riesling of wonderful grace and class. Amazing quality for the price!
96 points, Mike Bennie for Halliday’s 2024 Australian Wine Companion “From a single site in Polish Hill River, Clare Valley. It’s a ballistically good expression of the regional staple. Compact, taut, lengthy and oh-so precise. A flourish of lemon/lime citrus, green apple, fennel seeds and wet slate – the bouquet and palate in agreeance. Mouth-watering acidity a sluice around fine, powdery texture and that superb, persistent finish. So much detail and textural impact in this wine. A brilliant riesling that’s stellar drinking now, all refreshing, vibrant, crystalline, and yet you can see a very long cellar life, too.”
95 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Fresh lime, lime leaf, white flower perfume. It’s clean, clear and fresh, with sparkling acidity, fine powdery texture, a subtle juiciness, though refined and delicate in flavour. The finish is excellent, with something like pink grapefruit in the aftertaste. So good.”
