Description
“Hand-picked from four Adelaide Hills vineyards, chilled overnight, whole bunch-pressed the following day, deliberate juice oxidation and fermentation on fluffy lees. Trophy Best Pinot Gris/Grigio Adelaide Hills Wine Show ’15. The varietal expression (pear and spiced apple) on the bouquet is good, but it’s the texture and structure of the palate that must surely have earned the trophy. To describe a white wine as grippy is normally a criticism, here it is the opposite. This is a truly remarkable wine, not the normal anodyne grigio.”
The popularity of Sam Scott’s La Prova label is the result of a combination of innovation, awareness, site-selection, authenticity and value. These are Sam’s site and varietal trials, where he applies some modern and original methodology to what he’s learnt of how these Italian varieties are made at their origins.
He chooses the varieties based on an almost intimate knowledge of vines and vineyards along the length of the Adelaide Hills, and Sam maintains an input into the chosen vineyard’s management. The wine style needs to be terroir-driven, varietal and authentic, and must also carry the Scott signatures of drive, vitality and freshness.
From the winemaker about this release : “The 2023 growing season was mild and cool, with regular rainfall. It started late, finished late and the grapes had lots of hang time and light yields. Grown in the high, cool central Adelaide Hills. The sites and aspects of south-east and east facing slopes are the pick for early ripening Pinot Grigio which allows the fruit to ripen more slowly.
“Hand-picked, chilled overnight and whole-bunch-pressed the following day. This is to get the most pristine free run juice possible, with no phenolics. After we have gone to all those careful lengths we take the gloves off, allow the juice to oxidise and get some fluffy lees into the ferment. This is where we get the savoury note to the bright, vibrant wine. Vegan friendly.
“Aromas of Nashi pears and apples, which are also found on the dry, crisp refreshing palate. Great intensity and liveliness. This release benefits from superb ripening conditions, where the vines had ample rainfall and mild-to-warm days, with no extreme conditions, to slowly develop bright delicious flavours.”
90 points, Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion “This does the trick. It’s crunchy. It’s bright. It’s all green pear, lime juice, faint cut grass, some chalky and briny minerality. Neat and tidy, a bit of texture works some magic for elevating the wine, the general sense of vitality and vigour aiding drinkability. It’s good drinking right here.
