Description

Steve and Monique Lubiana established the estate in 1990 in Granton in the south of Tasmania. They have since built a reputation as one of the vanguard of Australian winegrowers, pushing boundaries with viticulture and winemaking techniques. Their beautiful vineyard on the banks of the Derwent was Tasmania’s first to be certified biodynamic. They have refined their range, which centres upon clear, characterful expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and world-class Tasmanian sparkling wines. They have continued to improve the vineyard and honed techniques in the winery, imbuing all the wines with greater texture and personality to make the most of the bright, natural acidity and transparent fruit that are the hallmark of Tasmania. Certified organic, biodynamic – Tasmania’s first.

‘The range under Stefano Lubiana’s banner is lengthy & the highlights are many. While there might be familiarity & finesse in much of Lubiana’s current collection of wines, there’s more excitement to come.’ – Mike Bennie, Gourmet Traveller WINE

From the winemaker about this wine:  “It is a relaxed style of chardonnay that is full of personality. This wine displays great drinkability – soft, alluring and satisfying. Fruit from the 2022 vintage was nothing short of exceptional. Picked on time at the pinnacle of ripeness, with great flavour and balance, it possesses qualities all winemakers wish and strive for. This chardonnay showcases bright notes of custard apple, peach and talc on the nose coupled with seamless layers of stone fruits, orange and meal on the palate. Light tannins and creamy acid round out the finish.

“Hand-picked grapes are processed immediately to preserve their integrity and purity. All fruit is pressed first then barrelled by gravity to the underground cellar. The juice, on full solids, fills an assortment of barriques. These are manufactured by small French coopers – with a balanced level of new oak. The juice’s indigenous yeast now takes the stage and erupts into spontaneous fermentation, bubbling away in our naturally cool and calm underground cellar. Once the wine is dry secondary fermentation begins with inoculation. Barrels are topped regularly and battonaged (barrel lees stirring) infrequently. This is how the French masters have been making chardonnay for generations.

“The 2022 Estate Chardonnay is a pale gold in colour. On the nose it is intense and powerful showing notes of honeysuckle, meyer lemon, white nectarine and pineapple. Hints of brioche, Comté and cashew also mesh beautifully with the fruit. The palate, like the nose, is concentrated and powerful, with a fine line of bright acidity. Yellow apple skin and vanilla also feature on the palate with a distinct note of crushed rocks, all tied together with a hint of nutmeg and hazelnut. Focused and powerful with mouth filling intensity, this wine is one to enjoy now or put down for 8+ years.” – Stefano Lubiana

95 points, Dave Brookes for Halliday Wine CompanionCertified biodynamic chardonnay from the Lubiana Derwent Valley estate. I love the wispy tendrils of struck-match complexity that float out of the glass as you lift it to your nose. They flit above some lovely pure citrus, peach and stone fruit tones that meld with hints of soft spice, nougat, crème fraîche, lemon butter, vanillin oak and river stone. Seems a bit more concentrated and expressive and less tightly bound than the 2021? I think so. Such are the wonders of growing seasons, and it is, once more, a beautiful wine to drink.”
