Description

“Those that do not have access to Raveneau and Dauvissat  – effectively unobtainable – can console themselves with these outstanding expressions of Chablis”  Le Guide des meilleurs Vins de France, La Revue du Vins de France.

“Droin doesn’t seem to get a lot of attention in the press, but in my opinion, this is one of the very finest producers in Chablis. I have also had great luck with older bottles, as these are typically wines that age beautifully.” Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate # 202

3 Stars – “This domain is part of the classics of Chablis, with a very beautiful patrimonie of premiers and grands crus.  The wines are marked by a strong vertebral acid column, and age a long time.” Le Grand Guide de Vins de France, Bettane & Desseauve (“3 Stars – Signals a production of high quality that serves as a reference in his region.”).

5 Stars/REMARKABLE  – Les Meilleurs Vins de France , Gault & Millau

“Benoît represents the 14th generation of Droins, whose history as vignerons goes back to at least 1620. Over the years the Droins have built up excellent holdings of both premiers and grands crus, and are currently making them to a high standard.” Inside Burgundy, Jasper Morris

“This beautiful domaine offers a full palate of Premier and Grand Crus that they vinify now with particular care. The intensity of the flavour of ripe grapes serves as a sincere expression of their terroirs; well defined, today, by the work of Benoît Droin, who joined the family domaine in 1999. … The persistence of mineral presence in the mouth is also intense. We are looking at the most generous and accurate work in Chablis, at very good prices, including the grand crus, in comparison with some inflationary excesses of the whites from the Cote de Beaune.” Les Meilleurs Vins de France 2016, La Revue du Vins de France

Notes from importer Vinous Imports:  “The 2014 vintage in Chablis was a relief for winemakers in general after the somewhat difficult 2013. Thanks to early flowering, the longer ripening season started and finished well. The vines were very healthy with evenly distributed growth, which lead to intense, remarkably balanced wines. Although a heat spike during flowering caused some shatter at Droin, reducing yields in some parcels by up to 30%. This is the third vintage in a row with reduced yields sadly. The hail damage in 2015 and this year’s widespread frost damage; it looks like demand will continue to run significantly ahead of supply.

The Droin family has collected small holdings in all the top premier and grand cru Chablis vineyards over the last 400 years. They have also played an important role in shaping Chablis’ wine production and local politics throughout their existence. Jean-Paul was one of the first to introduce oak aging to the region in the 1980s; a real innovation. Benoît, Jean-Paul’s son, has been making the wines since 1999 and he has now elevated the family domaine to the very top of the Chablis tree; assisted by their outstanding collection of vineyards, albeit small areas. Meticulous vineyard management, severely restricted yields and careful élevage of the individual cuvees afford the attention to detail required for greatness. The Droin style is one of purity and transparency, coupled with powerful concentration and deep minerality.

2014 was also the year that Domaine Jean-Paul et Benoît Droin was elevated to three stars in La Revue du Vins de France, the leading wine publication in France, where the domaine sits beside two of the greats Raveneau and (Vincent) Dauvissat as one of only three top rated Chablis producers. Since then the Droin name has gone from strength to strength internationally and we’re thrilled to be able to offer another stellar vintage from this benchmark producer. “

91-94 Points, Vinous “(began in 35% oak): Pale lemon-yellow. Fresh, inviting aromas of lime, nectarine, white peach, menthol, mint and fresh herbs. Dense, sappy and seamless; precise and light on its feet, with a near-perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Gains in thickness on the back end, finishing dry and classic, with lingering notes of lime peel and dried herbs.”  Stephen Tanzer, June 2015.
