“The quality of Clyde Park wines is consistently exemplary” – James Halliday
The pedigree of the Clyde Park Vineyard is renowned. It was established by Gary Farr in 1979 in the premium Geelong sub-region of Bannockburn with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir planted on the property. The vineyard was sold in 1995 and has been in the safe hands of Terry and Sue Jongebloed for the past 20 years. The vineyards are managed in a responsible, sustainable fashion and whilst not certified are organically grown most years. The site produces premium fruit from naturally low yielding vines which make balanced wines of great purity, complexity and finesse. The approach in the vineyard is very much hands on, with all pruning, picking and sorting done by hand; while in the winery a hand’s off approach is adopted by superstar winemaker of the future, Ben Mullen (previously of Yarra Yering, Oakridge & Domaine Dujac), allowing the fruit and terroir to shine in every bottle. With some of the oldest vines in the region coupled with an uncompromising approach to winemaking and viticulture, Clyde Park is at the forefront of Geelong producers and has helped firmly establish the area as one of Australia’s premium wine growing districts.
This Locale comprises estate fruit (handful of clones) and some bought fruit from select small growers, some whole bunch ferment and gentle maceration (pigeage).
Here is one seriously smart Pinot Noir that overdelivers.. depth of fruit, complexity, structure, balance and a modest price tag.
95 points, James Halliday 2018 Australian Wine Companion “Full, deep crimson hue; this is a powerhouse in its price class – in Burgundy it would be labelled Bourgogne. It can certainly be drunk now, but will equally certainly see its deep-seated cherry, spice and tannin flavour and structure come into full flower over 5 years.”
