Description

‘Pete and his partner Magali Gely operate what I think is the best new-wave of small-scale Barossa wine companies to emerge at the beginning of the 21st century… These weren’t big, blockbuster, showy wines designed to impress. They were wines that managed to take the best of the Barossa’s sometimes forgotten varietal traditions and fuse them onto a very European flavour sensibility.’ Max Allen, The future makers

‘It seems that Spinifex wines can do no wrong.’ Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.

How Pete Schell kept this one under wraps is anyone’s guess, but now that it’s released… we don’t care! From a total of 155 dozen, this is the first disgorgement (50 dozen only) and release of a Spinifex sparkling Shiraz. The base wine was vinified from a gnarly, 1898 vineyard grown in the deep sands of Vine Vale, Barossa. Comprised mostly of the 2005 vintage with small dollops of 2006 and 2007, the wine spent nearly three years in barrel before tirage, and went on to spend just under 10 years on lees prior to this first disgorgement. The sweetness has been held to the absolute minimum (approx. 3.5 g/l residual sugar). Can we call a sparkling red wine ‘amazing’? Can we get excited without seeming OTT? Let’s try to be balanced. Lovers of this Barossan specialty should certainly clear some room on their wine list to make way for this beauty. Those who don’t normally go for sparkling reds should still give this a go. It’s totally different to most sparkling reds on the market. Super complex, it reminds me of the best sparkling reds of yesteryear. Expect notes of iodine and game with hints of well hung venison, old leather and loads of spice. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and just bloody delicious. Also unusual for the style, the finish is savoury and dry which means it can actually work at the table. Bravo!

90 points, James Halliday “8 years on lees is an enormous effort for a total production of just 150 dozen and this first disgorgement from Pete Schell is a savoury and understated take on Barossa shiraz. It’s gamey and complex, with some brettanomyces building complexity and bolstering dryness on the finish.”
