Description
Sons of Eden co-owners, Corey Ryan (“cut his teeth” as winemaker at Henschke for 10 years) winemaker and Simon Cowham (ex-viticulturist Yalumba) can do no wrong! Old Vine shiraz from their 60 to 80 year old vineyards Ebenezer, Moppa, Manglers vineyard in the Barossa Valley. 20 months in predominantly new American and French oak. A wine that is powerful, concentrated, intense (very true to its Roman mythological namesake) and yet smooth. Be sure to decant this wine for at least two hours or cellar it for a decade! Superb quality balanced fruit came in from mother nature thanks to exceptional growing season.
From the winemaker … The story behind the label: “A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.”
Deep garnet in colour with an alluring complex aroma of dark-cherry, plums and roasted vanilla bean. The palate is powerful and well structured, fleshy, with chewy textured tannins finishing with polish and focus. 2017 is new release from another great Barossa vintage indicating this wine will mature well for many years. Drink 2028+ .. its built to last!
Reviews for 2016 vintage …
“Very dark, black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim with slight purple hues, very youthful in appearance. The nose is full and well-concentrated with deeply packed, but stylishly expressed aromas of ripe black-berried fruits intermixed with black minerals, a hint of tar, unfolding notes of spices and black florals with black pepper nuances. This has great density allied to finesse and style. Full-bodied, the palate has great richness, density and power of ripe blackberry fruit with notes of tar and minerals, a little game, with black pepper and Asian spices. The fruit is sweet, succulent and mouthfilling, and supported by considerable fine-grained, flowery tannin extraction and structure. The palate has great presence, depth and weight, and is essentially quite complete. The flavours carry with great drive to a long, rich, solid finish. This is a very ripe, fulsome, ripe Shiraz with deeply concentrated flavours of blackberries, minerals and tar, with game and spice detail on a powerfully constructed, but fine-grained palate. Match with casseroles and roasted game meat dishes over the next 10-15+ years. Named after the stronger more powerful of the twins that founded Rome. 100% Shiraz fruit from Ebenezer, Moppa and Menglers Hill, vines 60+ to 80+ y.o.”19.5+/20 POINTS! Raymond Chan, 12th June 2018

97 points and included in Best of the Best in James Halliday’s 2020 Australian Wine Companion “This has volume and spread and that’s always a combination worth swooning over. Dense plum, peppercorn, choc-orange and cedar wood characters deliver a masterclass on old vine Barossa shiraz.”
97 Points, Sam Kim, Wine Orbit NZ “… this gracefully powerful shiraz displays dark fruit, game, truffle, black olive and cedar characters. The palate is intense and multi-layered, and shows refinement as well as richness, wonderfully structured by fine, chalky tannins. Impeccably balanced and seductive. At its best: 2019 to 2030.”
