5 Star Outstanding Winery from James Halliday, voted Top 10 Dark Horse Wineries in Australian Wine Companion and Anna Hooper was named in Top 12 “Young Guns of Wine” for 2017.
Cape Jaffa winery and vineyard sits atop cave pocketed limestone on the very edge of the South Australian coastline – formed from the remains of coral and long forgotten ocean creatures as the sea made it’s retreat as recently as two million years ago. A unique and isolated post, approximately 30kms North of Robe, and 300km from Adelaide, Cape Jaffa wines are made with heart, earth and salt air.
To winemakers Derek and Anna Hooper choosing Cape Jaffa just felt right. Red loamy soil, free-draining Limestone, cool Summers and some great local surf breaks tipped the scales as they pioneered the Mount Benson wine region.
Their commitment to sustainable agricultural practices through organics and biodynamics (their vineyards are Certified Biodynamic) plus their love of the sea and sense of place is reflected in the wines they make.
From the winemaker about this wine: “We have a great deal of faith in the ability of these cooler wine regions of the Limestone Coast to consistently deliver elegant and stylish Shiraz.
This is my other favourite wine to make. Its not the massive block buster that Australians have come to expect from Shiraz but its still packs a punch in density but without any over-ripe characters. We source and blend this wine from the best barrels of our grower’s fruit, with a goal of uncovering the optimal balance between palate intensity and bright, vibrant fruit. This wine is drinking well now however over the next ten years it will become softer and more savoury if you prefer an aged style.”
Love the intensity and depth of fruit, fine grained tannins and balance here.. Gorgeous wine with power & finesse is this 2017
95 points, James Halliday “The grapes were sourced from Padthaway, Mount Benson, Wrattonbully and Robe, with multiple parcels from older vines. Destemmed, cultured yeast, 10 days on skins, 15 months in French oak (20% new). Full-bodied and very complex, allowing multiple aromas and flavours to make statements of blackberry, licorice, spice and positive tannins. Drink now to 2032”
