Description
The Other Wine Co. wines are entirely vinified and bottled by iconic winemakers Shaw + Smith in the Adelaide Hills. The wines are “other” partly because they give the winemakers a chance to lay with varieties and regions that don’t fit into Shaw + Smith. They are also an “other” perspective from so many wines that favour over-ripeness and oak instead of freshness and balance, and power over drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy. That’s it!
From Winemaker Adam Wadewitz .. “When we started thinking about The Other Wine Co. it was about the sort of wines that we like to drink when we’re out ordering a glass. One of the things you want is the right variety in the right place, first of all to tick that box, and the next is all about drinkability, about having something that’s really delicious and something that’s not going to be dominated by oak or alcohol or extraction.”
You say Pinot, we say Tasmania… it’s a match made in heaven. This is declassified Tolpuddle pinot noir fruit – the renowned and highly collectable Coal River Valley winery! Sandy soils on top of a sandstone base contribute to highly aromatic fruit. 31 year old vines, densely planted to a mixture of Pinot Noir clones. Wines from Tolpuddle retail for up to $90 a bottle .. so this is an incredible opportunity to snare this wine at a bargain price!
Fruit was hand harvested and then fermented in a combination of stainless steel, oak and concrete. Ferments were made up, on average, of 50% whole bunches and 50% de-stemmed whole berries. The whole bunches contribute to its aromatic intensity and a spicy flavour profile. With only a short period of maturation in barrel, we were able to catch it smackbang in the approachable Other Wine Co. spectrum. It was fined and filtered before bottling in December 2019.
2019 was a mild, even vintage with very few extremes of heat or cold, resulting in fruit that ripened slowly with great concentration, power and natural acidity.
Aromas of red berries and pomegranate, with a brooding intensity and a dusting of Asian spices. A complete palate experience for such a youthful wine. Abundant red fruits with hints of blueberry and black cherry that drive through the mid palate. The finest powdery tannins sit around the intense fruit core, softening the edges and providing a velvet smooth finish. 13.5 % alc.
To say this overdelivers is certainly an understatement. Be quick stock is limited.
91 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front “...Scents of kirsch and clove. Similar flavours, quite diffuse, there’s a hit of twiggy tannin, a little breathy warmth in the mix. It’s pushing towards dry red but also shows that slight muscularity of fuller figured Tasmanian pinot noirs. Nice chew through the wine, firm fruit character, a bit of sweet-cherry mouth perfume, a dry, dusty finish. Has good weight and agenda as a Tasmanian pinot, maybe just missing a touch of finesse. That being said, an overt pinot for lovers of the style is here.”
