Description
One of Paul Scorpo’s first jobs in life was in the cellar at Penfolds Barossa Valley winery. Since then the wheel has turned full circle through teaching politics, designing championship golf courses and running a successful landscape architecture business back to following his green thumb and planting a family vineyard on the Mornington Peninsula. After extensive research of site and soil characteristics on the Peninsula, he settled on an old apple orchard at Merricks North with ancient clay soils, protection from the harsh cold winds coming off the southern ocean, a gentle slope and dual aspects, which combine to provide the site with ideal ripening conditions for a range of varieties. Paul is uncompromising in his quest to produce the area’s finest wines and friend Sandro Mosele who vinifies the wines shares his passion. Occasionally Paul has sourced small parcels of fruit from other vineyards he manages on the peninsula to use in the Aubaine and Noirien wines. Scorpo Wines is recognised as a leader among the quality-focused producers of the Mornington Peninsula.
96 points James Halliday: “Hand-picked fruit and wild yeast-fermented for 22 days, then taken to French oak (25% new), bottled without fining or filtration 16 months later. The colour is fractionally lighter than the ’13 Noirien, as is the mouthfeel; the considerable upside is the greater elegance, finesse and length of this wine; the vivid red and black fruits are given shape by some foresty/savoury tannins and, of course, the new oak.”
94 points Tyson Stelzer “I’m often taken aback by the impact of new oak in great young Burgundies, but think little of it as the wines will find their balance in the fullness of time. The overt oak presence extracted from just 25% new oak took me by surprise here. But in the context of longevity, perhaps it should not have. It’s classy oak, to be sure, and it has the fine, firm tannin confidence and fruit length and presence to go the distance. Excellent black cherry fruit, lifted rose petal fragrance and bright acid structure are all there to be enjoyed right away, but the true rewards await those who treat it like a Burgundy and hide it for a decade.”
93+ points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front: “Excellent release of pinot noir from Scorpo. Tangy but powerful, fruit-driven but tempered by a savoury dryness. It tastes of dark cherries, woody spices, smoky/toasty/spicy oak and mocha. Dry and taut. Italianate, in a way. Lengthy. Impressive from start to finish.
