Description

Garagiste is definitely one of Mornington Peninsula’s brightest rising stars! Named in honour of the ‘Garagiste’ – ‘garage’ vintners of Bordeaux who thumbed their nose at the rigid traditions of chateaux, winemaker Barney Flanders makes succulent, finely tuned and elegantly crafted cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris, highlighting the subtleties of the Peninsula’s different sub-regions with small batches of very limited and high quality wines. Fruit is sourced predominantly from highly prized Merricks Grove vineyard, Silverwood vineyard (Balnarring) and Hugh Robinson vineyard in Moorooduc. Since their first release in 2006 their wines are highly sought after, highly regarded and like their labels, very cool!

Sourced from the Merricks Grove vineyard where the 20-year-old vines are rooted in grey sandy loams marbled with red ironstone.  the altitude and coastal breezes gift a more filigree, aromatic wine when compared with Garagiste’s other pinot from Balnarring.   Picked and hand sorted twice – in the vineyard, and again in the winery on a sorting table. Sourced from the Merricks Grove vineyard, the fruit for this wine was hand sorted twice and produced in two ways; one fermenter of whole berries and another of 100% whole bunches. These two fermenters are then blended together. The fermentations are natural with a reasonably long maceration and gentle extraction – light pump overs and a few gentle plunges. Matured in 300-litre hogsheads (roughly 20% new, François Frères) and ten months on lees before bottling, unfiltered. This is a deep, lively and savoury expression of Mornington, dangerously drinkable from start to finish. Expect a wonderfully graceful, succulent Pinot Noir packed with red plum, spice and dark cherry notes before a lingering, perfumed finish that suggests amaro spice and offers a lick of fine, supporting tannins.

What we love about Garagiste’s Pinots is their finesse, subtlety and complexity. Yes they are fun to drink and speak of where they were grown but there is also something engaging about them – they unfurl in the glass and keep evolving with every sip – a quality they share with great Pinot from around the world.

Imagine a punnet filled with bright Satsuma plums, red berries, a few cloves and a hint of grated nutmeg. On the palate you’ve got a refined Pinot with texture, succulent fruit sweetness followed by long, refreshing tannins. A really classy Pinot here.

96 points, David Bicknell for HALLIDAY’s Wine Companion Upping the ante from Le Stagiaire Pinot. Deeper darker colour, with a brighter hue. More pronounced black cherry fruit that has brighter contrast. Deeper more persistent flavour plus superior mouthfeel, and structure. And succulence too. 25% new oak barely noticeable, the wine just coming into its own. The only down side is that only 255 dozen were made.

94 points, Campbell Mattinson, winefront.com.au  “Garagiste pinot noir is one of the safest wine bets going.

This takes complexity in its stride. And complex it certainly is. It throws bunches of herb and spice notes at you but it does so on the wings of solid cherry plum flavour, verging on stewy and undergrowthy and yet remaining fresh, vibrant, indeed almost spritzy. It has beautiful flow, superfine tannin and succulent length. It’s just exemplary all around. It’s very young but the bottle disappeared all too quickly.”
