Dureuil-Janthial (pronounced Duray Jantay) is a star producer in Rully and Puligny Montrachet, white burgundy country.
The immensely talented Vincent Dureuil, only in his mid-30s, produces a stunning range of single-vineyard white and red Burgundies in the Cote-Chalonnaise village of Rully, where his family has been since the 1500s. Their wines have set new benchmarks for the Rully appellation and the Côte Chalonnaise in general. The quality reflects the outstanding sites he controls, as well as his tireless work in his vineyards, hand-picking, sorting and kid-glove treatment in the winery. The Domaine stopped using herbicides in 2001 and is now fully organic, utilising primarily biodynamic methods. The preference is to pick late (compared to many of his peers in Rully “.. to let the grapes attain full maturity so as to yield wines that are taut, attractive, with a pleasing minerality and the proper touch of acidity.”
En Guesnes, or Ez Guesnes as it appears on the maps, is a cracking little site tucked up behind the 1er cru Le Meix Cadot. Dureuil has a little Chardonnay here, but it’s the 1.3-hectares of 40-year-old Pinot Noir vines on the cool clay-limestone soils that make up the bulk of his holding. The fruit is completely de-stemmed, given a cold maceration for eight to ten days, fermented over a further ten days in tank, then transferred to barrel, one third new. Like all of Dureuil’s wines, the fermentations are natural, long and slow and the wine is bottled (after 18 months élevage) according to the lunar cycle.
Juicy with lots of violet-flecked dark cherry, beetroot and anise nuances as well as hints of cedar from the classy oak. The wine possesses beautifully tailored, lingering flavours, vibrant punchy acidity and powdery tannins. The weight, class and interest screams 1er cru. This is the real deal – pure, juicy Burgundy from a fine old vine source.
