Description
Bodega Chacra is internationally recognized as the pinnacle of South American Pinot Noir.
Plantings from 1932, 1955 and 2002 are bio-dynamically farmed in the Rio Negro Valley of Northern Patagonia half way between the Andes and the Atlantic Ocean. The valley itself is a glacial bed 15 miles wide and 300 miles long along the rive bank at an elevation of 300 metres.
Established by Piero Incisa della Rochetta (the grandson of the family from Tenuta San Guido of Bolgheri fame in Talia that makes Sassicaia) who discovered these abandoned vineyards in 2004 these wines offer a new expression of Pinot Noir. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic principles. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours.
Chacra Treinta y Dos is a single vineyard wine, made from old vineyards planted in 1932 on a land layered with clay, sand and pebbles. The most structured of all Chacra’s wines, Chacra Treinta y Dos is meant to be aged. Its soft characteristics and velvety tannins, however, make it drinkable at a younger age. This red balances toasted spice and mesquite notes with the macerated cherry fruit character, remaining fresh through the mineral-tinged finish. Aged for 18 months 20% in cement and 80% in 2nd and 3rd use French oak barrels. Organic and biodynamic. 12.5% alc.
98 points, James Suckling ”Red cherries, strawberries, spiced plums, violets, cloves, dried herbs, undergrowth and a touch of smoke on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins. Firm, mineral and tea-like tannin quality. Very focused and structured. Needs time.”
96 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front “Poached strawberry, cinnamon dusted plums, mint and violets, ferrous and stony, new leather and blonde tobacco, liquorice root. Medium-bodied, succulent red fruit and spiced plum, fine-grained spread of tannin, black tea perfume, and a grainy savoury finish of superb length. Distinctive, and while the Pinot Noir signature is firm, it’s quite clearly from ‘somewhere other’. Outstanding.”
