Description

Venerable vines, fastidious viticulture and cutting-edge winemaking kit. It’s a killer combination, and the reason why Yangarra is producing some of the best wines in the Vale right now.” – Max Allen, The Weekend Australian.

This cutting edge McLaren Vale producer is making delicious energetic estate grown wines from it’s biodynamic vineyards.  We have been bowled over by every wine in their line up … a rare occurrence in this business!

2018 Yangarra Estate Vineyard Noir is a blend of 40% Grenache, 21% Mourvèdre, 14% Shiraz, 12% Cinsaut, 11% Carignan, 2% Counoise. Grenache is the emerging hero variety of McLaren Vale. Traditional blends of Grenache from our region generally focused on the varieties Grenache (G), Shiraz (S) and Mourvedre (M), and thus the term GSM. For many years in the old world Grenache has had many more blending partners. In France, namely the Sourthern Rhone, it can be blended with Cinsaut, Counouise, Picpoul Noir, Muscardin. In Priorat Spain, with Carignan.
We started planting some of these obscure Southern Rhone and Priorat varieties in 2008 which has culminated in our first Noir blend being produced. Many of these varieties, including Grenache, have a blanc (white), gris (grey) and noir (black) expression of the variety, which lead to calling this the Noir.

2018 was a text book growing season, with good winter rains, and favourable weather conditions during a very mild spring. We had a generally dry summer, which led to earlier than expected picking dates, especially with lower than average yields. By the end of February and early march the Autumnal nights got quite cool, which really slowed down the ripening process.

The grapes from each block were hand-picked, destemmed and mechanically sorted. Each varietal was handled separately until final blending to allow concentration on individual characteristics. Whole berries were then transferred to open-top fermenters. The fermentation tanks were cold soaked for 5 days until the onset of wild fermentation, utilising the yeasts that naturally come in with the grapes from the vineyard. The open fermenters underwent a careful regime of plunging and rack and returns. The wine received no fining, just filtration. Bottled in January 2019. Certified Organic/Biodynamic.

The wine has aromas of clove spice, floral red fruits, black fruits. Lifted fragrance leads to bright flavour and vibrant acidity. Elegant and balanced.
95 points, James HalidayIt’s impossible to bypass the southern Rhone Valley in writing about this wine with its blend of grenache, mourvedre, shiraz, cinsaut, carignan and counoise. Autosuggestion of course, but its ultra-fragrant bouquet crosses into that of the garrique, the juicy palate bubbling with similar flavours. Such value.”
93 points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front “It’s a great wine to drink. Spicy, herbal, fragrant, a bit different, plenty of character, the fruit to carry it. Sparks fly. I guess you’d call it red fruited and medium bodied but that’s just the start of things. You have to seek this out. It’s got something.”
93 Points, Ray Jordan, The West AustralianThis is a blend of lots of unusual varieties. There’s grenache, mourvedre and shiraz and then there is cinsault, carignan and counoise. This is just stunning and a perfect example of some of the fascinating wines that these guys are producing. A wine you just want to keep gnawing at.”
92 Points, James SucklingThis youthful ‘village’ red has a very vibrant, energetic and composed feel with abundant mulberry, blueberry and raspberry aromas that flow to a composed, spunky palate that has vividly appealing fruit.”
91 Points, Toni Patterson, The Real Review “Taut and snappy with fabulous vibrancy. It is tight, youthful, and all about the fruit. A modern, high-energy style with a vibrant red-fruit core.”
