Description
“A maniacal attention to detail in both the vineyards and cellar sets Fontodi apart as one of Italy’s most inspired producers.” Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Fontodi Estate is one of the most highly regarded Chianti classico producers and is located in Panzano in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. Owner Giovanni Manetti (whose family purchased the estate in 1968) has 70 hectares of biodynamic vines referred to as Conca-D’oro “golden shell” for its heat-trapping amphitheatre shape perfect for ripening grapes. 2008 was the first vintage to be certified organic although organic vineyard practices go back to 1990. Free draining soils called ‘galestro” (schist rock with marl and clay) suits sangiovese perfectly. Meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard and winery sets this estate apart!
This fine chianti classico is the estate’s main wine – 100% Sangiovese (up to 20% of other varieties is permitted in the blend however they are purists), wild yeasts, meticulous fruit selection followed by 12 months in old French oak.
Relish the beguiling delicacy and complexity of aroma (black raspberry, cherry, chargrilled meat, leather) despite the power and thrust of this medium to full bodied vino italiano. This fine vino rosso cries out for roast meat. Salute!
This pure expression of Sangiovese sees 2 years in neutral wood and bottle before release.
17/20, Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com “Aged in French barriques for 18 months. 170,000 bottles produced. Pure and fresh with really admirable purity. Gorgeous and very much of this place. Long with fine tannins. Bravissimo!’
“I loved this 2015, which seems to speak so eloquently of the region and the charms of the Sangiovese grape. Its purity that is so magnificent, plus its balance of ripe but extremely fresh fruit and that tanginess that characterises a fine Chianti Classico. With particularly fine tannins, it lasts and lasts. Its 14% alcohol is not obvious. I gave it 17 points out of 20 and would happily drink it any time over the next five years – preferably with food. 13/7/2018
Antonio Galloni said this about 2015 Chianti’s … “The 2015 vintage presents consumers with a tremendous opportunity to acquire fine, cellar worthy wines without spending a fortune. In 2015, the warm growing season yielded rich, sumptuous Chianti Classicos with great depth and intensity. Vintages like 2015 tend to raise the quality of entry-level wines. That is exactly what has happened with the 2015 Chianti Classicos.”
93 points, Wine Spectator “Rich, packed with cherry, leather, dark chocolate and wild herb aromas and flavors. Dense and vibrant, with a long, mouthwatering finish that picks up a graphite edge. Best from 2020 through
2032.”
Notes from our importer … “In any vintage, Fontodi Chianti Classico is smashing wine, but in 2015 it is outstanding (maybe the best we have seen). Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backdrop for expressive red cherries, licorice, tobacco and spices. In 2015 this Chianti Classico includes grapes usually designated for Flaccianello, making it perform like a “baby Flaccianello.” Sangiovese grapes ferment for two weeks with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks, and the wine ages in barrels for eighteen months before bottling.’
