Description
Villa Argiano lay claim to being the oldest wine estate in Montalcino, located below Saint’Angelo in Colle, some 8km from the famous wine town. Built in 1581 the Villa passed through many sets of hands over the centuries and in 1992, the current owner Noemi Marone Cinzano purchased the property. In the past the renown consultant, Giacomo Tachis, the man behind Sassacaia, was involved in the project and the Bordeaux varieties were planted but today Bordeaux-trained winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers holds the reins. The estates range of wines is superb and includes Suolo, their silky Sangiovese and stunning Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.
100% Sangiovese. “Argiano makes their Rosso to be a fresh and fruity wine for earlier consumption. The fruit hails from a portion of the estate vineyards with a higher clay content that helps them to achieve this style. The wine refines for seven months in large, neutral barrels and two months in concrete prior to bottling.” Vinous Media
About this vintage from the winery: “Warm winter, rain showers were not frequent but sufficient for groundwater requirements. The months of June and July were perfect, characterized by some rain and a beautiful temperature range. In late July and early August, there were some very hot weeks: the vineyards reacted very well without going into water stress. A rainfall at the end of summer allowed maintaining a gradual and homogeneous maturation.
Fresh and vibrant, it has aromas of cherry, black cherry along with citrus and spicy notes on the finish. Harmonious and savoury, it is a balanced wine whose flavour makes it gastronomic and versatile.” 2021 was a dream growing season for sangiovese..
91 points, Monica Larner – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate:
“The Argiano 2021 Rosso di Montalcino shows raspberry tart and strawberry shortbread on first nose. This is a simple but elegant wine that gives you exactly what you want from a Rosso with an exceptionally easy-drinking style. Aged briefly in cement and large oak casks, there is iris flower, almond and forest berry backed by fine, chalky tannins. This is the spirit of Rosso (in a 39,000-bottle release). Drink 2024-2028.”
Reviews of 2020:
90 points, Vinous Media “Masses of crushed cherries, ashen stone and grilled herbs make the 2020 Rosso di Montalcino impossible to ignore. This is a silky and pliant effort with a pleasant inner sweetness and pretty strawberry fruits. The 2020 lingers with a slight herbal tinge and a tart twang of wild berries, yet the endnote is freshness. There’s so much energy here.”
93 points, Wine Enthusiast “A very sanguine nose has cranberries, wild cherry and strawberry fruit leather, followed by sun warmed bricks and top soil. The palate offers more crunchy red fruit, but also fresh, herbal notes of wild fennel and sage with the metallic tang of soil and sharp-edged tannins. Excellent balance and integration.”
